[0:42]" Once again -- patriots playbook it used Thursday it is. Patriots dot com radio as always John rookie would you as we count down to. Yes Cincinnati -- coming on Monday night I have to admit it is becoming little bit more. Increasingly obvious that we're still important to -- from day I'm not so sure that's a good thing I can't wait for one dating are already so we can kind of you know this thing in the we're spending an inordinate amount of time talking about Cincinnati and maybe it's partially. Yeah maybe it's partially. The other -- a good idea that was -- little music here because this will give us you know part of object I think for a what's coming up on on Monday night. Maybe it is for the week you'll. -- we had some issues during yesterday's programming -- things and just out now complacency I think this program went through. And I think you do. I'm talking to you listen in on the other side you computer and already you yes you right there. My -- and complacency issue yesterday and I realize that yesterday program might not have been conducive to complete and total shall we say audience participation. Because we did hasn't just dynamite interviews yesterday in the program producers -- myself maybe not so much the interview being here. As it was the interview -- that is subject matter on the program with them Ron Jaworski was fabulous yesterday. And if you -- just logging in today and -- listening to prohibiting and you missed yesterday's program I would urge you to. Download the podcast just because he was he was really good and hopefully you know we'll have a chance to talk to him again before. The season is out that's what I love about doing this program in its first since he's. I can tell by yeah. Download the podcast now thanks I appreciate that I would totally concur download the podcast seeking -- that Ando els had a chance to visit with Jim hobson from my Bengals dot com to get a little bit of an insight from mom. Cincinnati point of view at this at this time in frankly speaking they're a little bit of hurt right now one into -- we -- some time with a yesterday. But the POW guys have been complaining -- for a day or two that you know way nobody's end this. Everybody's just kind of like it only in back and I think -- get a little fat and sassy. And so I think this is the exact thing that you don't want your football team to do. You don't want to bubble team to get into this kind of a condition -- you don't want the team to be complacent you want this team to have it a mindset of taken it one week at a time. And -- preparing and putting blinders on trying not to look too far ahead and so my guess is here is that if you want to ask the team. To do that and that's what you want this team to do then you. As a fan and you as an observer and you is an interest in listener an interested party to this program in the New England Patriots -- the same way. So I would ask you to you know contribute I would ask you to. -- focus I would ask you to consider all of your options before just deciding. Two and those blow off the singles and let's move on in the next week. I don't really think that's what the patriots have in mind of course the next week will be Cleveland and then course we get to that the Dallas Cowboys so. We'll try not to look too far ahead even though that is our want to that is our desire at some point. And we do spend some time doing that because we can yeah. And they don't down the hallway but at any rate I just wanted to bring that out. I'm also going to bring -- just couple moments some superlatives that you may or may not be aware of with this football team that I think probably are causing this false sense of security. That I -- I'm kind of feeling about this team -- that I'm kind of feeling about defend them around this team and see if we can't shoot a hole or two in some of this I'm not doing this just via and they say era. You know -- mean just to be contrarian but what I'm doing is to try to present you know is evenly. Cited a packages I can't what you consider that you know. Even at one into an even though they apparently don't have a defense right now that let's just say is doing very well. That Cincinnati's eminently capable of one in this football game next Monday night. I -- for all -- there's the great numbers that the patriots have -- thus far. Well they're number one in the NFL -- three weeks in total offense break and a little bit further the patriots are number three in passing offense the number four. In rushing offense so for those -- that have questioned the the the I guess the so Murton not a good word for it I guess the soundness of the running game over the last couple of days. They are fourth in the league in rushing offense. Fourth a 151 point seven yards per game. Third in passing dolphins to 893 which makes the number one overall in total offense at 441 per game. The number two in points per game at 38 points per game just behind the Dallas Cowboys by half but it."
[5:54]" Now conversely. Cincinnati is pretty good offense is well they're number five overall in total offense in the NFL 393 yards for humans what they're averaging. They're number two in passing offense Carson Palmer's averaging 301 yards per game -- And obviously the -- to the top receivers receptions wise in T. J. Houshmandzadeh who is split 29 catches lead in the league right now. And of course Chad Johnson is 25 catches but Ted leads the league in receiving yards. So yes when you say that the patriots secondary will get a test -- sure they will. But I would also argue the patriot front seven also get a test. In in of the patriot front seven. Can more than match up -- their into the bargain here than the patriots secondary should be able to do you know some good against those two top receivers. John mentioned yesterday that honestly the reason you know that Cincinnati one of the reason maybe that the just not literally out scoring people is because they really missed Chris Henry as -- third option. And Henry won't be able to come back until after the eighth week of the season because of his suspension. For happier. So you know that is an expected that won't yet entry into the equation. And for the bagels they have -- couple things one that they can stay afloat. Until a guy like Henri can come back and integrate himself in the off into two until we can get. You know some folks a healthy and sound defensively we spent some time talking about that would -- from -- dot com yesterday but offensively there's no doubt instill -- puts up just dynamite numbers. Mention to him passing offense fifth in total opens their fourth -- tied for fourth in points per game are averaging 31 points per game. Well they're only averaging 92 yards a game rushing which puts them 20 in the NFL. And Rudi Johnson may not play on Monday night still some time ago even lose is Thursday it's where these teams compared D offensively though that you find the biggest disparity by the numbers. Again the patriots numbers are definitively solid their strong. Patriots as I'm sure you were undoubtedly aware and you've been bragging undoubtedly already to your fellow. You know fantasy football leaguers and in NFL fans and wherever you may be. Not only the -- number one -- relevance they're number one in the NFL in total defense right now given up just 200 in seven yards per game. They're number two in the NFL overall in passing defects giving up only a 133 yards per game. They're number five in the NFL in rush defense giving up only 74 yards -- game on the ground. And their third in the league in points allowed -- 11 point seven is total. So strong defensive numbers without Richard Seymour and without Rodney Harrison in that lineup and and only votes to get better you know we talk we spent some time as we talk about red zone deficiencies for the pats. Opponents of going inside their 20 yard line five times. And they've scored five touchdowns. Now five times inside the red zone once again. Is the second fewest in the entire league behind Pittsburgh Pittsburgh we -- their opponents three trips inside the red zone. But Pittsburgh is only -- one touchdown. Patriots even a ball five touchdowns every time opponents cracked the 20 yard line so that is obviously a point of concern we've spent some time this week talk about that in. And you know while we're nitpicking over things that are in pretty good shape overall that is certainly an area that you can legitimately nitpick on. But the bagels. Or really struggling on the -- that it may be the understatement of the entire day today. Overall Cincinnati's defense has given up almost 400 in three yards per game total offense that is 20 ninth of 32. In the league. Points allowed. But given up 31 point seven almost 32 points per game that is also 20 ninth out of 32 teams in the league. Rusch Stevenson past events are both 27 in the league to given up a 145 yards on the ground and 257 through the year. He gets -- that there are some deficiencies the other thing is is that you know well. This dude dude if you find one that I guess maybe silver lining in an otherwise dark cloud of angles defensively they're only allowing 36% conversion rate. On third down which is not far off with the patriots are lines 36 point eight the pats -- given up 36 point four on third down. So if you're under 40%. In third down conversions defensively you're actually doing a pretty decent job. They're given up a lot of big plays patriots often seems to be geared toward big plays thus far this year. If so fact though you can see where there might be a bit of a mismatch. But the oddsmakers don't quite look at it like that because the odds before I looked this morning the last spread that I saw the patriots a seven point. Favorite for money in right now that may or may not be about right would you but I think anytime a team is a touchdown favorites on the road that is significant. When you consider their home field advantage is worth anywhere from three to six points. It usually worth at least three maybe get a dominating team again home field management worth up to six points -- believe in the NFL. So you're looking at if if the patriots head of angles here even -- that high powered offense that they have. If the patriots -- turn this around a plane was at home they can be almost to two touchdown favorite against this team based on the odds. I don't like that that makes me a little bit uncomfortable. I have to admit there's so many things can happen when you're on the road and I tried to talk a little about this yesterday. And I didn't really get a chance to jump into much would that would -- but fact remains is that you know I I know that there is complacency out there because ironically last October 1 exactly one year to the day the patriots played it then and riverfront and beat the Bengals 38 to 13. And so because of that and you think -- on this is a better team this year in Cincinnati probably does have the defense they -- that they had last year you know they're gonna smash of I certainly see we could draw that conclusion but is a different year it's a different day it's a different game. Different set of circumstances. And sometimes when a team has its back against the wall and I think the angles. You'd have to -- have the back against the while they're already behind you know a couple of games in the standings now. And they don't really want to fault too much further behind at lest they be you know and given up for dead and gone. You know just a few weeks into the season and this is a team that was expected to. Both externally and internally expected to contend strongly for a playoff spot in the AFC. So then that their backs to the wall on Monday. And you know it kind of brings up the old adage go to you know what happens when you know you've you you've corner wounded animal well they usually come out scratch and claw and fight and and I certainly expect nothing but a great game from Cincinnati on Monday night and -- quite frankly you should not be surprised if that happens that way either. Is trying to enter a little known logic into the equation here. Since we seemed to be somewhat over inflated with our own self worth in the patriots nation. Give you a few more things that you can kind of you know feed the hopper with today. Yeah you probably realize that overall patriots have a pretty good run of success against teams from the AFC north. Division special Tom Brady but Tom Brady is ten and one in his career against AFC north things he's never lost -- Cincinnati's two I was four and one against Pitt -- three you know against Cleveland and space Baltimore wants to beat them. Carson Palmer all into conversely against the patriots in his career thus -- The patriots in -- against the AFC north this is the first of what I gonna play all four teams this year in that division. And if you're looking for good -- I suppose here's one for the patriots last time they played all four teams from the AFC north. That was back in 2004 they -- foreign one against the division including that win over Pittsburgh in the AFC championship game. Overall since 2001 including the playoff patriots are ten and two against teams from the AFC north. And they won the last six in a row against north teams dating back to 2004. So they've had some pretty good success against teams in this division I a wide turns out to be that way maybe it's just because as the Knicks team on the on the on the schedule what you know they've had a lot of success against a lot of teams from a lot of divisions but particularly against the AFC north. Who knows why it matches up like that. Bomb that is obviously a good -- that's probably has something to do with the fact that there seven point favorite. I'm sure that the defensive numbers disparity has a lot to do what the patriots all sore seven point favorite on Monday night. No doubt in my mind anyway. But I think we'll realize that you know seven points mean that may seem. -- like a lot of may seem like a little you know based on you -- estimation of the relative strengths of these two teams but to be honest would you 87 points is. A drive it is a core it's it's apply. It really is the difference of one play in a football game. One score is one play. If you make the play. You win you don't make the play and then the game is even and it's anybody's game. That's really all you're looking and that's the seven point is sort of a little bit of a misleading statistic especially when you're on the road it's really one. Play and so in that regard it means the bagels it to my estimation of one play away from being right there with the patriots. And I think that somebody have to kind of keep in mind as we kind of going to this thing on Monday night to be honest with the series between these two teams it's not deep series. Well this will be the 21 time that the patriots in the Bengals have ever met the series goes back to 1960 eights. When they first met. It's -- second straight year in which they've played in the regular season third time in fact in the last four years they played in the regular season. -- you might remember the last time that Tom Brady did not start. A football game for the patriots and quarterback. Do you. He remembered that would have been 2001 season's opener 23 to 17 was the Cincinnati win on the road. I said riverfront it Paul Brown stadium now silly me bomb. But yeah that was obviously that was the week before the -- Louis knocking Drew Bledsoe Tom Brady came to take over he's never looked back since. But that was the last last time the Brady did not start a football game of the patriots in that would have been in the season opening win the Bengals in 2001. So just to have. You know there is a little bit over at least a recent relationship between these two teams overall the patriots are 12 an eight and 112 of the previous 20 meetings. Over Cincinnati in Cincinnati they are five and 65 and six they were three and five and riverfront -- one and one and Paul Brown stadium where they'll be playing on Monday night. Actually played one game -- stadium which is where the University of Cincinnati please let me know that so they -- something nudity as well I also mentioned superlatives. And the fact is is that you know while we're talking about the teen numbers some of these. Other numbers also kind of reflect where this team is in. Help sort of magnified I guess the the dominance of they've shown over three weeks and you know I'm going back and forth try to present is balanced picture is -- here in in May be admonishing you know us for you know thinking too much ahead and getting too complacent but the same time the numbers certainly. Kind of bear that out. Since the beginning of 2001 patriots have allowed just over 17 points per game and that second in the NFL over that span. It actually allowed 17 points for him or fewer in four of the six seasons since 2001. The only team that is actually allowed fewer points. Per game since -- his believe or not it's Tampa Bay in their only about a fifth of a point ahead of the patriots. Patrons -- right there ahead of Baltimore Pittsburgh and even Philly who had pretty good defenses over that time. So I just you know. Trying to slow down Cincinnati's offense you see the patriots have been able to do with certain with a with a certain amount of consistency. And I think the fact that the patriots are off to a fast start over schedule. That right now is ranked as third toughest in the NFL based on winning percentage total from last year. That's also a reason that you don't even think we've given them in in people around the league given them a lot of credit. At this stage of the game simply because you know home pay there's a tough road to hold the patriots are off to a good start in the 16 team on the schedule were playoff teams a year ago. The plan the teams that were seated. In each of the top three spots in last year's AFC playoffs you know obviously San Diego and Indianapolis and then later Baltimore. Ten of the 16 teams on this on this schedule -- were 500 or better. Last year one of those of course being Cincinnati with a singles were being they were eight made a year ago. And the fact is that the patriots. Tied the best road record in team history last year when they went seven and one. Away from Gillette stadium and yes that's where they'll be on Monday night away from Angeles state. So yeah have a little on this idea have a little on that side we're telling you the patriots have some of these numbers going in their favor and certainly it's a great start of the season and yet. Don't get to overcome it because you're really only one play away from being dead even with his -- football team. We're going to dive into the since -- a little bit more and give you a chance to get how they look at this match up and get their thoughts. I'm going into a matchup with a -- the patriots -- get into the conference call with the Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis coming up on John rookie and you are listening to Thursday's edition of patriots playbook."

But all the problems on this team seemed to stem from the deep fences out of the football that's for a guy like Marvin Lewis. At least in theory you'd think you would have this area of expertise.
