Patriots Playbook - 1/9/2008

Our schedule this week is obviously a little bit different simple because the shorter work week with the Saturday game as opposed Sunday and so that means we backed everything up we've already lost sometime this week just because of my absence on Tuesday with college basketball duties so well. Would basically taken Thursday's program and moving it to today. Tomorrow will be patriots Friday program Mike pilgrim from ESP 1980 in Boston will be primarily occupying the slot all the won't be around for a little while. In this time slot tomorrow but it's only because we -- and move things around because the NFL decided the patriots -- best served. In prime time on Saturday night that is of course that's why they couldn't gain the kind of revenue they do on television so. Because this is technically at Thursday. Too much coverage about a quarterback and whatever he does in his personal life. And a slew of other surprises and touching stories as well like the direction last week I do lost by what a playoff -- for -- lawns and their comrade. If they're they're there's nothing like I mean I know college football has its own drama and and mystique and so on but the NFL. Just get bigger and better every year."

Just sort of -- lone voices out in the wild or he's really I guess has belief in his convictions here. What are your thoughts and in terms of guys making a stand where this is concerned."

[6:56]" Well I know how when he might consider gotten I think the thing it's been the funniest watching my -- that he has yet to be bluntly audit. Is trying to figure out which one of them actually said first that the patriots would go undefeated. Because they're great -- of sorts I've heard Tony -- tigers that it -- April Mike Greenburg that it after I think -- connected over fifty you know I'm just kidding. You -- that I can sometime in September so people it. Everybody wants to take the claim. -- right. Okay so Jeremy and you know -- certainly try to Palestinian just like greedy -- like Tony. But more and more than I think even he with you see what our industry. That the guys who aren't necessarily the players. Want -- want to put the crown on it saying I was the first to say. That Randy Moss would not be it is accurate in doing I was the first that they different Mark. We have a great comeback -- I was the first that -- Tony Romo flashed again. We -- want to -- first male guests in our business and so and so I get it up and hang our hat on I just stick with my pre season predictions. Like everything else that comes around for anybody whom. Now it's pars looking at this particular game I mean obviously it it's pretty easy to sort of see that Jacksonville's best deepens may be -- all fans in ball control and whatever the case may be. And I'm sure going to be some wrinkles thrown in it very well is going to come down of the fact you know that most playoff games come down to basically who. Things as far as I'm concerned obviously like -- agree or disagree which -- you for your number one. Comes down to field position number two. Comes down to turnovers if these two teams turn the ball over this Richard salute if they're consistently poor field position. Cause that office is vehicle from further away in Jacksonville's case. That may even be a bigger burden -- it would because they're not a bill from coming from behind type of -- however turnovers. Turnovers especially in the special teams game can be deadly in the playoffs."

[9:17]" Yeah well. Turnovers especially the playoffs. And turnovers on special teams are such momentum killer right and being placed on special teams are very big momentum killer. And there was no better example that and watching the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. -- eighty yards down field against the Jacksonville Jaguars. And they haven't read I'm sorry to Rees Jones drew. -- ensuing kick off 96 yards in this set up a very short touchdown run by Fred Taylor. And all the Steelers work of eighty yards. And suddenly -- 77. So special teams where the patriots are always been good under the Bill Belichick -- I -- bigger -- of -- patriots colts series. Is that is that 3034 game at Indianapolis more known for the goal line and game John but to -- always remember that. That -- Johnson. Returned the last play of the first half for touched me out. Big momentum swing right then -- and then after the -- to come back from 3110 to make it 3131 -- Bethel Johnson returned the next kick off. Into easy scoring range. [10:53]" Right and go back to the special teams play in the AFC championship games against the Steelers as well in the turns and I mean it's just. -- rarely they're not only momentum breakers I think their game winners in game losers that's how important they are. -- special teams obviously sometimes picture taking I mean field position -- you sometimes taking chances if your import position that you might not. Know early break in the course of a regular season."

[11:17]" The New England Patriots in their first Super Bowl periods of this current wrong I'm not talking about the against the bears and implement the Packers. Got to the Super Bowl by winning in Pittsburgh went out Tom Brady. Throwing a touchdown -- he got hurt the game I -- Troy brown punt return after a penalty by the way. That gate -- Brenda and second chance -- be on the Steelers a blocked field goal return by the patriots. And Drew Bledsoe coming in and throwing a touchdown pass that year the patriots won the Super Bowl with their offense scoring. One offensive touchdown in each playoff game. So there are other ways to get it done. And special teams it's such a killer and the play of the Jacksonville special teams has had its good. And bad moments during his feet at Maurice Jones drew is a huge backer on returns but I also -- a year and you can take this for what it's worth because it was a lost -- last game of the year -- Davis return basically back to back kickoffs for touchdowns. Against the Jacksonville jaguar so. Jacksonville had -- good and bad moments on special teams rue -- a year and this would not be a good time for them to have an off night."

[12:34]" Well here's how I think this team really basically boils down to Russell. If Jacksonville because this is that this is aid and often that is not a -- necessarily built to be quick striking. If they don't get a quick lead in this thing. Or they don't match a quick score by the patriots right off the bat. I think it'll be very long day and could potentially be a long day for Jacksonville that having been said. If he didn't score quickly or let's say the patriots corporate and and Jacksonville. Holds on the -- on matches that make it 77 say going into the second quarter but I think you'll be real dogfight this is where the turnovers and special teams play and certainly. Field position will come and -- but I -- the first quarter is the key quarter here."

[13:14]" I don't think there's a question about it because it hit it. The Jacksonville Jaguars have to show that they are going to come into Gillette stadium and played their game and not in New England Patriots game we saw last week them rolling 28 to ten. And suddenly start doing stuff it's not necessarily that they started just throwing the football and steady constantly killing clock. -- more opportunity reject the abatement is very good but their secondary very -- And suddenly 2810 became 2920 Pittsburgh. If they're going to get into the kind of game that New England would love them to get into. -- nobody does that -- that you don't you do not want to get into free for all with a team that scored the most points in NFL history. We want to go there and do what you do -- Jacksonville can do -- very good things because -- yet to. Powerful back and I take them about it particular date rape story. This year there's no doubt about it."

[14:22]" hit and let -- that this guy got you know seventeenth in NFL history in rushing yards you know -- that is great playoff moment -- you know drug ninety yard touchdown. Played at the Miami Dolphins and that squeaker against Miami back in 99 to 627 game in the particular flavor like I expect. Maurice Jones drew. He can beat you running he can to reach you receiving he can beat you one returns he can beat you -- a blocker at short Marion and about six or seven weeks ago. This is a really solid football player and he did everything I think. Everybody what Reggie Bush would be. And he does things in some ways even better than Reggie Bush -- a complete player. Reggie Bush is still kind of caught up in this running side to side like my windshield wipers. Rees Jones drew hit the whole he would it would authority he runs with power he runs and quickness he could be you know like he did something it never been done in a in a playoff game last week you run for a touchdown. He caught a touchdown pat -- returned a kick off ninety plus yards and this guy is. Serious and it'll be just very very interesting to see the mindset of the Jacksonville Jaguars because. Everybody is I think everybody's been hearing that this is the team of all the teams did who can go into. Gillette stadium because they have their physical styled like because it aside and Ricky besides -- And no lead it -- gave New England the most problems. Jack you know can't worry about that -- had to go and they're worrying about playing football they can't go and are worried about winning."

[16:03]" Yeah that's true I think that's very true and this is the team I think we earmark as. Being the potential. Well most difficult first match over the patriots that really existed and it we're talking but missive about this as long as a month ago. -- Jacksonville with the team and want to come in New England that was the team that potentially could give the patriots the most of the physical like."

[16:23]" These teams play in the playoffs two years ago it was a very interesting somewhat controversy all. Gain not percentage was played because it was it was a one sided game -- controversial in the sense that typical art which finished the season as the starting quarterback. Projected bill because Byron Leftwich you've got hurt suddenly found himself on the bench and left which is that I was not a 100%. Wound up starting to gain -- arcane and later played very very spotting Lee but it was. No contest was 23 New England Jack mills showed it -- experience now for people who don't remember last year game. New England against the -- grow big and physical Jacksonville Jaguars. Went down to Jacksonville the next the last week of the regular season and ran the ball stay on the Jacksonville's wrote decisive game not necessarily on the scoreboard but I think people were surprised that -- You know. You know that this is was being big and bad Jacksonville team they were a couple of weeks removed from beating the colts 4417 in New England went down to Jacksonville and beat them."

[17:30]" The totally correct. I find it also kind of strange that kind of getting often different tangent here but. You know even though these teams have had some matchups certainly in the playoffs that they really don't have a whole lot of history guerrillas the Jackson has been around the league that long but. Patriots have dominated what little history between the two teams there are 61 all week. One game that Jackson was one also came in the playoffs."

[17:53]" teams have met three previous times in a play off. And this state it's been hey who's who of football when the patriots in terms of the patriots head coach and eastern those meetings is an understatement. The first one would be a championship in 96 -- ourselves -- that coach Rick it was in Jacksonville win their I think their only win this series. In the playoffs in 98 like -- just mention what Pete Carroll was the coach and then of course two years ago when Bill Belichick was the -- so fitness center in eaters some. Professional -- college. Championships rung up quickly -- reject."

We'll come back a little bit two this came in a moment I wanted to briefly touch on the other ones as well as we normally do from week to week in terms of -- trying to look at the schedule and such but primarily. Com the other. Game coming up on them Saturday one with the kickoff of the first in the NFC game and Cedric are the probably hit is that a 4 o'clock game."

[18:53]" It is 430. -- it was -- o'clock on Saturday yep CNN reporting 1 o'clock 430."

[18:58]" Right Seattle Green -- is the NFC game on Saturday and channel I thought actually it was fairly impressive in dismantling Washington last week. And -- Green Bay obviously it was a big sentimental favorite there and everybody wants to Brett Harvey would appear. That are but it would like Brett part succeed here the Seattle have enough momentum here and Kim Green Bay continued to. Kind of -- keep the lightning in the bottle so to speak from the regular season."

[19:21]" All of you know Green Bay is between that played well down the stretch they didn't really let that -- to Dallas at second that back all the locals say they played a very very sloppy game to not forget the sloppy game against Chicago. Okay so. They might showed a little bit of there inexperience and I think that the key. To this game is inexperienced at the Jacksonville team now and I don't -- obviously but. A great part of this team is in the playoffs five years in -- Mateen has been to the Super Bowl recently. So you've got some experience here in a lot of regards. Good thing it's also impressive about Seattle John is. Speaking that speed on defense you know I don't think a lot of people realize what they like the Super -- couple years ago you know they played Washington in divisional playoff they then Ronald. The Carolina Panthers who went into the game with a lot of momentum and then it in in eight again you to -- controversial because there were more flagged in the UN in this game but with the Super Bowl loss to the Steelers. My point is that both Carolina and Pittsburgh that you are I think got surprised by the speed. Seattle's he's -- now last year you can't really see. It'd evidently back again you saw last week they play very fast on defense Patrick -- had a big year. Surprisingly Atlantic just let him go to Seattle if you combine him with it you know Julian Peterson located two -- had a hell of an impact in his short stay in the NFL becoming a perennial pro bowler and so on a Marcus Trufant first pro -- for him this year. Defensively they are very impressive now offensively they border on being one dimensional they don't run with the authority they used to. I certainly Shaun Alexander doesn't -- with the authorities used."

[21:18]" But when they stick the other backs and they are like Maurice more. These seem like they'd run better than -- instead. Green day. Is that a Cinderella type this season they got a lot of big plays out of Brett Farr who is played within himself for the most part the only game. And I applaud the Chicago game because I still think he's doing what got him they are most of the year. The Dallas game it seemed like he really try to force -- the -- Chicago game was it was less about what our. And more about rebate punting game that gear that gave which was really it is accurate awaited Chicago. He's -- the playoffs for years ago Matt Hasselbeck it was."

[22:01]" yup that was the game where he made the proclamation in overtime right."

[22:04]" a ticket -- score at right. He to a touchdown that probably -- who played for the other team an art of course will be there so. There's a little bit of history here and of course the guy coach's -- that somewhat six that. At Lambeau field not necessarily the Seahawks but certainly one was part part coach and went to a couple suitable -- I think it is a copy to pick because you know -- a lot of momentum. -- always feel like one of these scenes that sits around. You know can get a jump started again although I won't say it has been around in the play -- That innocent should go back in 1990 with a bye week the home team. Pretty sparkling 70% to -- 5350. As far as the winning for the home team in this round and in six of the seventeen years the home team won all four games. So 13 of the time it's a clean sweep. But the home team houses in the divisional round right in the divisional round yet not not the wild card certainly not the championship but -- that is because you've got a fourteen -- sitting. Against that team that's already played you can't overlook those numbers. That -- instead. Seattle come up with some momentum but. Offensively they can bog down time. And I think they'll be enough big plays from -- far either to the titans either to Greg Jennings has become his Javon Walker -- Javon Walker -- and I think Green -- and find a way to get this done."

[23:41]" I would tend to agree at this stage of the game only because I think. They've probably been pointing to this at least this week -- this particular opponent I'm not convinced that Seattle has enough of quick strike power certain with the throwing game although I guess the leader's legacy if Deion Branch actually he gets back correct for Seattle."

[24:03]" That's what I thought I that'll certainly be the equation. But how effective will be you know is anybody's guess that would those."

[24:12]" Well."

[24:14]" Seattle at times mystified Asia -- I don't know good role when they decided to become orbit acting scene that are running team and then suddenly a couple weeks ago relate nick Carolina I don't I don't. Look at the Atlanta game because they were -- people in that lineup and that one but. I think. Early in the year Green Bay it was -- Seattle because they were very one dimensional effect the Green Bay is -- run the football with Ryan grant I think it is the difference -- I think you'll see a couple bells and whistles from the Packers I think it should have some very entertaining game. It would not be surprised at all. That we saw another overtime to you know it's funny it. Seattle I believe it walker lacked. They're one and six lifetime on the road forget neutral sites like the Super Bowl. They -- there won it six and I believe they've lost six straight road playoff games this -- back a long way. The funny thing is done it three of those six at one over time. And they lost small low -- and behold it was overtime for years ago I think it's overtime again the Packers get it."

[25:20]" Packers went -- very good question in my head general quickly to the other NFC game which will be the Sunday afternoon. 4:30 eastern time kickoff New York playing at Dallas this is the match up. If you follow the NFC as the match up one NC and this -- a long time cowboy fan I want it to the giants coming of all the momentum in the world. I want to see the -- is coming off a great performance against the patriots -- that the giants were superb last week in the opening round of the play out the accomplish and I had they -- a little bit. And now the cowboys -- the enigma because they kind of midfield -- in toward the end of the regular season. Which one has the --"

[25:57]" Well I'm very happy to hear you not say those two -- sentence. An orthopedic team three times once he's going to thank god they -- because as we --"

[26:12]" Correct that's correct -- direct hit somebody once a year always throw that out there are people don't know when talking about if you go back to the merger. At this will be the eighteenth time. That seems to play each -- third time this season -- instance like the D one team won the first two games. Those seventeen previous time. Before the playoff game a team that swept the regular seasons here in eleven of the seventeen instances the team also won the third game. -- record -- and explode at right out you know the old Burt Reynolds -- next C. But they were on in his -- most of the afternoon one they played against the cowboys in in the two games they played this year. I want to say Tony Romo had eight touchdown passes for each game -- you don't set twice total in those two games."

I also believe that the giants have an excellent. Opportunity to win this point oh they dull but I'm just saying I'm trying to look at the things someone impartially and I went to greet New Yorkers are going right now."

[29:32]" I I just think it hit a -- it is really interesting to see this is where wade Phillips earns his money -- we heard a lot about you know Bill Parcells and you know wearing out the troops in. It and you know be a little war you know more discipline oriented and we'd had a different style but. No way to take into teams to the playoffs before. And -- Phillips is not one with those teams in the playoffs so. We we shall -- but I'm kinda leaning toward the New York Giants the -- lobos surprise here and we'll get a week to rematch. Of the green bay Packers and New York -- in Egypt Egypt."

[30:15]" Interest are and then of course via AFC divisional game other than the patriots in the jaguars. San Diego at Indianapolis I know that's the game the patriots fans definitely wanted to see him in there. Tennessee would have been great just because it would have been in theory be easier on the face -- that we realized that's really not necessarily the case and I'm not so sure even though San Diego is coming improvement they can win it because they did in the regular season and Indianapolis. I'm not so sure the Minneapolis just doesn't roll right over on this time."

[30:47]" My favorite one of my favorite stat this year that very few people will be answered correctly. What team in the NFL this year gave up the fewest points in the lake."

[30:59]" He reportedly was Indy."

[31:02]" A lot of people know -- that -- it and I'm lucky permitted limit is eighteen last year gave up 360 points. Which was the most ever by a team to win the Super Bowl. It shouldn't give up to 62. They're defensive unit gave up 26 -- which was tight for most in the NFL attracted. -- India now it is that nit in new defensive player of the year about theaters this -- it seemed really swarmed around the football there's no doubt in my mind we'll see Marvin Harrison. This did it -- that also remember the last time they played. Diego chargers Darren Sproles returned a kick off. And a punt for a touchdown and one quarter that's great innings threw an incredible its inception and yet. The award for missed field goal inexplicably door surprisingly we act by Adam Vinatieri acute shot relatively. They would have won net -- any way and I also remember a play in the game which now I don't really get on the reps all that much but. And AFC championship game if that now that the -- does occur on Saturday night. There are some that are saying as we talked about just a little while ago. But if there is to be an upset this is the spot where it could occur do you concur with --"

[33:34]" While and you shouldn't go with a team that you picked all -- I -- agree with."

[33:39]" Of course idea but I'm indirect at Jacksonville mindset and last week. I just thought it was interesting at times they look like they showed still some immaturity now physically. I'm not worried about them mentally you know I that is over the weekend as someone. -- to go in Jacksonville last week one game played up in speed really needed to win them to try to get -- new programs started. But in both instances they're really kind of got away with one John. And they can't afford to play like that this week if they're going to beat the two big boys into England and Indianapolis and I'm a I think Jack was going to have to do some things a lot better played better -- below more committed to run. And I think saw little nervousness that it gave accord last week.
