[0:00]" Well let's guns don't have fallen out of the also want to go pot pie. Did anyone hear it is Patriots playbook -- back got combat on the fifth day on there. Breaking down last Sundays game than ever man coverage. And these kids ready for the great -- do. Right -- the rest of the 2008. NFL's. And some of the -- stuff in between now feelings John look. -- Patriots playbook and."
[0:40]" It's Wednesday inside Patriots playbook on Patriots dot com radio I'm John brook. Through the the home headquarters today as we try to do on Wednesday's I have to be honest though is -- television is going to join -- a little bit here from Patriots football weekly. The opening part of program I have to be honest here at the main reason that I come home and do the show for my studio at home on Wednesday's because somebody's got to take care of the puppy. Well I don't blame you for that -- and kind of dug out and -- I I have a four month old chocolate Labrador. That I used to have the -- lab and I gotta tell you if you don't watch every move she makes the house is destroyed. Coach is actually down here with me in I'll student right now yet have you always on. She doesn't have headphones on what she does have the bone you know them the whole ball which -- to get the Merrill alone. Yeah I I'm so I'm just like I'm keeping my distance but she's totally happy when she has that the work on and he keeps are occupied in. Everybody else and on about their lives though it buddy who has had a puppy or as a hobby at home you know. Once I speak I I would love to have you bring her into the studio for a show. Oh great I love to have a pat on the charter. Yeah I -- that a -- ran around there the well it would be believe me she would do plenty of running and what's her name. Ginger. It's great injured him that a -- it will listen -- need to trust -- you know it's been. Fifteen years fourteen years as a that a baby of any kind you know what I'm saying and so and I can remember the last time for the sale of a -- up. So it's it's been along time it's the it's a little bit of a challenge put that are let's get as a business at hand and you were out of practice earlier today and out and you gave the guys throw indelible early book the book that might be just tuning in. Oh what's the latest under the under the dome today well."
[2:33]" We had some good news in that yesterday there were four players missing and among them was Richard Seymour. But he was back today at practice that this -- that was some good news do we know why he wasn't around you know why I speculated that maybe because yesterday was that an abnormal day of practice it's usually their day off on -- That may be. Some of these guys needed an extra day just the veteran guys needed maybe some rest. So I think image and a coach's decision kind of thing you know that that doesn't come as a surprise I think we've seen that. Over the last few years from time to time that it just -- you know kind of pick and choose pointers somebody's a little sore. Or coaches just kind of recognize that -- you know so and so might be slot for a little bit. You know get an extra day off here and there right so that's my guess I don't know anything concrete but I noticed that the that was just my speculation right and little bit of bad news is they were still four players missing from practice that three others from yesterday were a -- Thomas. Eric Alexander and LaMont Jordan -- taking Steve -- placed on the missing list was Jonathan Wilhite and no. No idea why he wasn't out there didn't him in the locker room know either prior to practice which isn't usually -- one of the guys that. Around there and yeah cause some guys don't necessarily. Show up -- locker room during open locker time but he's one who usually is so right. Could be that -- something legitimately or maybe he got. You know something nicked up yesterday in practice but will find out later today when -- participation report comes -- about our right absolutely but -- they were inside David -- inside -- scheduled to practice inside all week I think because it's so cold up here. In New England their private. Preparing for the warmer weather down south. In Florida this weekend so I think they're staying in side to get acclimated to that but the turning on the heat in the yeah I think so yeah I think yeah I think so when we get there at. It's relatively warm and probably by the time next to get down to business and even warmer so. They they were in shells today they had that the -- in the -- those tiny little soft pads. And that was about it so. That's and we only get a few minutes to -- stretch and maybe -- and then we kicked out over it that's about the extent of what I can tell you but that but something."
[4:50]" What do you think in this part of what I was going to ask those that listing today in terms of or email question of the day but. You know obviously great way back in weeks three. And you get pounded by 25 points there are obviously several things that kind of standout. But what I wanted to open up with any way at the beginning here web radio -- Patriots dot com is the email address. I realize that maybe that's a game that we all kind of want to put back in the recess our minds. But the same time there were several significant things that I think happened at. In that game. Beckett served as you know drive point or. Rallying point or. You know just some sort of in an impetus maybe to do a little bit better this time out. -- baker -- what stands out most in your mine. About that loss. To Miami in week three."
[5:42]" Well. It's funny you -- that you'd you'd want to put that game it's our audio mine as possible I would. I think from a fans perspective maybe but from a player coach's perspective I'd want just the opposite I'd want them to look at exactly what went wrong and why they weren't. You know lost by -- point five points. And make the corrections I would want them to be watching so much film this week in -- undoubtedly they are. To try to figure out what went wrong how they can fix it and then make sure it doesn't happen again this weekend. And I think the one that stands out as the one that everyone's been talking about it a while can't play because before that game. The Dolphins didn't employ that it was sort of a brainchild it happened on the flight back from. Arizona. Leading up to the game against New England in week three there and their quarterback coach who had. Experience with batting colleges -- an Arkansas. Says hey you know what we have been -- the ball we we have a couple of good running backs we did this in college what was has given trying to see what happens and it was just successfully you've seen them run it against every team they've played since then. It now. -- you may make an argument that it's it's becoming less and less successful every week for them and now maybe. That they're playing the team that they first had success with it again this weekend. It's pretty interesting because I I I highly doubt that new England's going to let themselves be burned by the way they were that first time they thought because. Let's face -- everyone in the stands. Everyone on the sidelines nobody knew what was coming. In that in that first game right -- the problem was. You know typically when he sees something like that against the Patriots that there are good team and adjusting. Either at halftime or later in the game or some point in the game used -- adjustment and open like that is taken away it was never taken away in that game so. That's Americans are myers'. Can they make enough adjustments this many weeks later against hoping that they had. Absolutely no success stopping back then. And now there's enough tape on it from other teams defending it or try to defend -- that I thank you Tennessee. I think you're going to -- Miami at least try to do it again but I think -- Sima the Patriots have better better luck defending."
[7:51]" Well to give back to the the the original question at least. All the while -- at all in relief the emergence of the wildcat Dolphins are running of the -- route. It certainly is is standout memory I think for a lot of people so let me fill this -- off the top web radio at Patriots dot com. What do you remember most about that win for Miami you remember the wildcat plays. You remember the fact that Joey Porter had four sacks. In that came and obviously mouth off before and it got an extra one after the -- yes yeah he sure did. Is that -- I think what I remember most about that is -- it was just 25 point loss. At home. I mean that that stands out like sore thumb committee. And obviously was also Tony Sparano their first year coach it was his first -- team and and that's probably lost in the -- everything but. You know among those items what stands out most to you is there's something that I missed. About the 3813 loss back in week three that still stands up to use -- would like to hear your thoughts web radio ads. Patriots dot com -- you send us the answers to that today I'm. Wildcat -- but I just the fact that the Patriots got spring Eric I just I have a real hard time. If you try to -- to team its only loss that you know what ten games in the in the history of the stadium. And -- to lose like that to a team that won all of one game. Last season. Is is just it's just remarkable I think we all realize. That Miami was better than a one win team last year. And the probably not as good as you know of the six wins that they have right now I'm sure somewhere the answers in the middle. Fact is -- is that the riding some real momentum now on I think we all know that. -- when the National Football League. Kill momentum is a funny thing in guys try to ride it for as long as they -- and you know. He can work it really does because this is a league full parity from top to bottom."
[9:44]" Insurers. That it's funny what stands out to me a little bit is the fact that the last time they have lost the regular season game. What's to Miami. Going into that game right and right and it you know the Super Bowl aside I'm -- talking regular season here. You kind of had the year you almost I don't want to say yeah yeah. None of a thought coming of course but. It's just ironic that they have historically had so much bad luck against the Dolphins whether it's up here -- down and down in Miami. And you just kinda new. -- it it you know that regular season Richard was going to come to an end at some point and it just it. Almost fitting that it happened happen. Against the Dolphins. And you know sort of of a bizarre bookend to that streak you know that point one nothing debacle down in Miami I think there was no. Six are at 3 excellent but it. That was an atrocious game for the pads and then the next time to have an atrocious game against that's -- the same organization different players of course but. Just needed to me that that that's the -- thing it's how some franchises. Coaches and players can change but the the organizations themselves have trouble with certain other organizations in the Dolphins -- one of those."
[11:02]" Yeah you know we'll talk a little bit about that so yesterday after you left to mean the fact is is that the Patriots have traditionally always have problems playing down in Miami and now that you've got. You know extra pressure on your shoulders for this game because of the obvious reasons I mean he can't afford to go into these guys. He can afford a third loss in the division otherwise you're going to lose just whatever tiebreaker there would be in terms of wild card spot in -- ball. A good solid two games behind the Dolphins really practical purposes in the standings if you lose this game and so here. You clearly climbing it's going to be an uphill battle where you probably would have to win out. If you lose this game. You'd probably have to win the final six games of the regular season even have a shot you know that's that's that's the kind of you know corner that you back yourself into. The Patriots backed themselves into if they lose this game so it. It's pretty easy to see you know where the importance though lies here. The thing I talk a little bit about yesterday -- that. I count out you -- want to open up with today the fact that I -- fans at the -- of the show yesterday sort of consider where this team is calm and where they currently. Are and in all honesty. Are you surprised are you pleased are you disappointed. With where this team is -- again I I'm I'm really kind of try to take the whole picture. You know into perspective here because of you -- injuries. But obviously there are expectations. We talk so much about you know of the depth that this organization has yet. Some of it is certainly come -- in the offenses but less so on the defensive side. And so I'm wondering. Where the feeling lies especially a lot of affected Buren have been basically playoff like battle this weekend with Miami. On if if largely you're surprised. In a positive stance or. In a negative sense about this team you know through ten games and that's something I hope it will also get -- response to today but in your estimation. Do you find yourself surprised positively or negatively about this team being six and four."
[12:59]" I. That's a good question. I wasn't really sure what to expect. When Brady went down and Cassel came in because none of us really had ever seen the kid play in any meaningful games. And he would have an entire season to do that when Brady went down. I really didn't know I I I I really could of forcing two things -- seen them just completely tanking and going. In a worst case below 500 missing the playoffs and best case scenario. Then doing exactly what they've been doing which is to win and to day in the playoff on and possibly. You get even. A Warner to -- And get a and a first round bye I think it's entirely possible I thought because of their. And it was it we're going to see a lot of low scoring tight. Contests kind of like back in 2001 word in doubt that he and alive and it was a lot of scoring. I'm a little surprised at just the opposite Cassel only officer -- putting points on the board. For the most part and the defense the front seven in particular are not really living up to the type of expectations that I had for them which was to be a dominant group. Jerod Mayo aside of course yeah -- but I'm I'm also pleasantly surprised that. So many of the rookies who are playing playing at a at a decent level. On tempered though by the the support tackling I've seen in India. That the soft over. Over the middle. Gains that they're giving up to a lot of teams the Dolphins were one of them the Jets were another one for awhile there. So. I'm I'm at about even kind of a watch John word where what my expectations were and -- being mad because I'm I'm optimist about some things and I'm very pessimistic in the appointed mothers."
[14:55]" Well here's where I stand and I think that I have to agree review but just for the sake of argument here all pick one side over the other I have to say that largely. I'm disappointed and in the reason -- at this -- and again I'm I'm taken into consideration. All the entries of which of course there have been some significant ones and we obviously know what those are at this stage of the game. But I I am disappointed because I think it's mostly because of what I've seen as a young. As the as a deficiency on the defensive side of the football. I expect this Patriots deep in to be a better defensive team and it has portrayed itself to this point in time now. You know I realize that lost Rodney Harrison. -- realize that lost Bayless Thomas realize they've lost a little bit of time you know on the front four as well that lost Jarvis Green for a little bit of time and you know obviously Tank Williams was expected to be -- you know big factor here and they didn't even get him on the field this year so you know. I understand all that. But I expected I think more. -- and surely this is the right word but I expected more cohesion I expected more. You know off the yield. You know penetration by guys like Seymour you know Warren. I expected Mike Vrabel to continue to wreak havoc off the end. -- he did toward the table -- the question that we really haven't seen and you know and I I knew going in that the corners were going to be. It'll be Achilles heel here. And frankly in sort of a warped way I'm almost -- known. I don't want to -- pleasantly surprised no but I'm not I'm not I'm not surprised by the way that the corners have played they've at least held their own most of the time. They have been beaten. But again we expected I think less from the defensive backs that we expected from the front seven does that make any."
[16:40]" Sense yes absolutely did -- they've gotten the defensive backs have gotten significantly better since that San Diego game and they let all those big plays ago. I'm not sure exactly what they did to change that but it seems like they haven't been letting themselves -- beaten that badly. In games and considering the injuries and the shuffling that's had to take place because of that. IA IMO I am a little -- Surprised at how well they've held up. They they lost Terrence Wheatley in the weeks that that's a little but it death that that they're not going to have anymore and they haven't really filled that spot of their really. Thinner than they were even a weaker to a go and at that spot but. There -- finding a way to get it on a kind of reminds me of I think it was 3. Or 4 when they went to the Super Bowl and and they did it with. Don Davis filling in at safety. Right right they had so many injuries that they were just they were really we -- know who they were picking guys up off the street week to week to to play corner. That that year so. It it reminds me a little bit of that not not quite as bad but. -- they're they're finding a way to get it done and and your right it's the -- I expected that out of the front seven and not the defensive backs and -- kind of it it at the opposite and them and them I'm disappointed in the front seven but. Surprised and you know be a little bit optimistic about what I've seen. From the."
[18:15]" Well that's a question of course that I want to poised to be into the listeners here today so one. You know number one surprise in a disappointed or any positive since. About some facet of the football team offensively -- defensively I think that's you know what we covered their. Number one number two what's most memorable. About the Patriots losing back in week three to Miami. One specific thing that stands out the most in your mind about that game. At Foxborough in number three. The other thing I want to talk about that I was something you've got retired but we were -- right at the end of the of W. What is the overtime story -- and and whether or not you have a solution a viable workable solution in your own mind. To solve. Overtime in the NFL that is clearly it's too difficult for guys like Donovan McNabb remember I mean that."
[19:03]" I'm I'm still astounded by that I mean at this level. I. There's no excuse for not knowing something as basic as that you know we'd we talked about the island of our show. From noon to about. Now if it's an arcane rule like you know right legal for past fine it's something like that never gets called an unexpected no silly things like that but. Something as basic as what do you win lose or tie game. I mean that that pop Warner. That that's that's want to water you -- I don't know -- yeah you would I mean like you know ten yards for a first -- do you think you know overtime all right you know first team to score wins I mean that's community you know how long -- game -- don't you don't you -- the coaches prepare your team for your two minute drill at the end of a game yeah I mean I don't know I just on how that on escapes and -- and Israel but -- As far as the overtime goes I like you're right it -- play a full quarter. A -- quarter and then who's left standing like -- still tied it then fine and it's it's hot right. -- I'm fine with that I like that idea them."
[20:04]" I'm good to me that seemed to be the most fair and equitable way everybody's guaranteed a possession if you will you can still play its. To wear your regular football sixty minutes strategies come into play you know with field position kicking game and punting and -- someone deep and got a Yana. Nothing changes. In terms of football strategy if you just play the fifth quarter. And approach fan's perspective you get an extra 45 minutes of football pretty much pretty much the only you know as as I think it was brought out on the -- people who probably -- about that would be TV but frankly you know what. Andy you know they're paying the price so once we put sixty minutes back a little bit I mean really who cares yen in you know. Losing viewership you know you're not losing no absolutely that's the that's the bottom on they would not be losing viewership -- I'd argue you might have better viewership the biggest people. The interest to people would be riveted to the game to find out who the -- gonna -- exactly you know zone -- I appreciate your hanging around today and I will talk again tomorrow you know from a good look at that puppy. Erica -- I needed -- skeleton you know from a Patriots football weekly it would Jonas forbidden to Marshall as well -- they've -- you've got -- topics of the day the talk about number one. Yet again what's most disappointing or pleasing to you about the Patriots right now being at six and four. You know after ten games eleven weeks into the season that's number one number two. What I remember most about that loss to Miami back in week three and number three -- you have a solution. Four overtime. In the NFL. Are hopeful that something for everybody today chew on those questions fire off your emails web radio -- Patriots dot com going to get your answers but. Going to take -- time on here because it just a couple of moments stand -- gore the former. All pro offensive lineman and current CBS analyst W part of the broadcast team. [26:10]" Michael -- went down on book and it case. Not everybody is where they had to be at this point. Oh. Will people working on injured or and we Greg does that set up they -- pretty good job of you know communicating with the the CBS -- to have mr. leaderboard you're available talked to you today and talked all of us today and we will -- with him shortly so in the meantime let's keep those emails Coleman shall we. Web radio act. Patriots dot com is the email address web radio -- Patriots dot com want talk about most memorable about the loss to Miami back in week three. Because frankly. When you are all shocked. All of us everyone -- frank I would argue that Miami fans we're shocked in the other direction. I mean they might have hoped to win this game you know you think me going and they were -- to. They were one end what more than fifteen yeah that's common law's -- one and fifteen last year they were -- into the start the here new regime new head coach. You know and all and -- a shocker like that on everybody I mean. That started the entire national football only. And because it was so significant I mean that was a seismic. Week I believe. In it is resonated to the point where this team sensed that point in time. That that -- to start they've won six of eight games. Now and they want anything terribly impressively well no not overwhelmingly but they've managed to play well enough to win. And so the Dolphins are hugely. A byproduct of the scheduling system. That is they finished in that led -- last place of the teams that you know that finished in last place comparable divisions played him -- who's going to be on the schedule this year. And that will realise as I said earlier that this team was not as bad as one and fifteen a year ago we certainly learned that back in week three. They may not be as good as you know six of their last eight in terms -- the win column either. Probably somewhere in the middle may be airing toward the side of being pretty good. What -- really contending team this week is going to tell right if they can beat the Patriots again and yes I know it's at home. But they can if they can sweep the Patriots. Then I'd have to you'd have to say that Miami. Is it true contender. Miami has arrived back onto the scene in Miami is -- compete for -- division but certainly into the playoffs. I don't know that the Patriots are dead completely as far as a playoff team but as I said yesterday -- outlaw on record here right now. I tell you that the Patriots do not win this game I do not believe they will make the playoffs this year that's how important this game is. To the Patriots chances of getting in. Now of course I could be wrong because yes as I suggested -- just go -- but this team could rip off. You know if they lost to Miami they could conceivably rip off six straight wins finished eleven and five and probably eleven and five. I'm going to guess that that's going to the very minimum get them wild card spot if not a division championship at eleven and five. Because the way you don't New Yorkers -- Miami's playing I don't the other one of those teams finishing with you know you know right now with four losses. Now of course the case may be appeal finished eleventh -- five together because. I'm not sure does -- does New York played Miami in the mail I haven't looked this get close enough. You know then you're going to lose out on any kind of tiebreaker. But let's face it it would be does a it does serious damage to play -- losses. Or two playoff chances if they lose this game which itself that's number one what's most memorable about that loss to Miami back in week three use the wildcat. Offense that you know -- the Patriots had no answer for. Is that the fact that you know they lost like 25 points total which totally and completely floored me that's my most memorable. I guess memory if you will -- Tony Sparano on his first win. Is Miami coach that day you know first win for a new regime of course under -- Bill Parcells -- in the shoulder and on -- Joey -- you know he his his mouth. Runner off the mound before the week he backed it up. Patriots always -- thirteen points he managed four sacks himself during the day at a course -- running his mouth off again this week as we talked a little about yesterday. And I don't know what you saw the quotes but. We'll pick your players you know and in particular Heath Evans quoted in a couple of the Florida newspapers today. In the locker room yesterday basically saying hey you know what reporters earned the right to talk. They kicked our butts back in week three. He's earned the right so until we shut him up he can -- only want to. But I feel like that's a fairly. Typical Patriot answer to a because you know most the time when he has paid -- you feel about Joey Porter and you can get this cross eyed look and it's like you know -- you know doesn't bother us one way or the other that's the general consensus but you know Heath Evans frankly. Those -- pretty honest comments. I -- that he's right. Much -- much that we had -- the -- that Gordon and importer of you know flap his -- he's absolutely a 110% correct. They don't like the Patriots. The Patriots don't like them. If he feels like the Patriots this respected them Lotta that probably stem from the fact the -- flap is -- anyway. But now that the Patriots got their butts kicked back in week three. And he still -- and his gums as far as I'm concerned you know what Joey keep flat but a baby keep going. Because you're looking at it from a New England perspective -- you want the guy to continue to keep his mouth open until some -- somebody. It is silver helmet can stick his foot in his mouth and stop the talking. That's what you want to have happened if you're Patriots or Patriot fans so -- that is absolutely a 110% correct. He's earned the right -- because the Patriots did nothing to shut him up. Eight weeks ago. Nothing to shut him. That's how you can handle the Joey Porter story I think overall. -- a couple of other things as well we're talking about you have -- you have a solution to the overtime problem in light of the you know the whole. Donovan McNabb I didn't know you know I didn't know with the overtime rule was comments I mean as we talk about I find that really. That's a final incredible but but you know number one. Did you know the overtime rule number two if you did that how would you fix overtime from what it. Presently -- Nobody likes ties. Mean obviously that thirteen thirteen time on Sunday between the Eagles in the Bengals is the first time in six years in the NFL. So I mean you know you got I mean my own son who's almost fourteen years old. You can like that I mean nobody could tie in the NFL I had never seen one. You know consciously remember one and technically he's right I mean you know. A long time -- anybody in a time -- at the -- It doesn't solve -- that we play to win right Herm Edwards you play to win the game so in that regard. -- should continue to play now I realize in the regular season you gotta put some kind of a finite end to all. And really that the way to get this thing done here is very simple in my own opinion play the fifth quarter. Play it out let him go. That way you know you don't have to you don't feel like your team is going to win if they win the coin flip it over time which is of course what happened to the Patriots that's last week. In the overtime loss to the Jets. Now certainly put all the blame on Allen on the defense because it's of the defense to stop the -- Adam in the third. You know and in fifteen and -- sixteen yards deep and heroin into the field and I realize it's been home. Revisited territory here you know that we talked about that yesterday and probably serve little purpose to talk about a more right now but. Fact is -- deep it could have stood up should have stood up and they did not. And all I could see or someone might say what you don't want -- why bail out a deep into the can't stop on the the first team to score sure it went well. What this does -- is it evens out. The proposition in other words. -- let's say you're just incredibly unlucky you never win a toss what you know you're gonna get the football generally speaking at least once. What it'll mean it would be a pretty unbelievable occurrence to have a fifteen minute drive would it would it not I mean. Is it conceivable I suppose it's possible but I'd say that would be one of the rarest things -- receipt. I don't know what the longest drive from start to finish in NFL history might beat -- go up and send it over today via email if we even have. You know a statistic -- the Elias sports bureau would probably know that. Typical long drive you know being 8090 plus yards is usually in the you know 19. Minute range. Suffice to save you play a full quarter no matter how much -- team has dominated you offensively and your deepens just can't get them off the field you're gonna get the football a chance. To at least even the Cold War. It seemed to me the most fair and equitable way to solve the problem in my opinion because. Number one everybody's going to get a chance to score number two you can play with absolutely. Regular. Time strategies in football plea field position in all it takes nothing away because in overtime now. You know certainly there's more a sense of urgency to stop somebody in the opening drive if you might not -- a football. And for those that you know might propel my proposed that the collegiate way -- things well. You know I mean -- start of the 25 yard line and you know. It just. Takes a lot of the game of football out of it takes a lot of the strategy away. It's like playing arena ball. In helping anybody really wants to see that -- in fact I understand why college. School -- understood what colleges have their rule because I'm sure there's an injury factor plus you know it's more -- an entertainment factor at that more rock rock. You know in the college game and that's -- it works for them it's great but I don't think the NFL should necessarily subscribe to that -- Plus we don't know culture that American studies. So anyway I think that's -- Colleges it's okay they can keep it as it is at least college to step in the right direction we don't have seven overtimes and more than after the second overtime. And you score touchdowns you have to go for two. You have to convert you have to be able to -- acute and and that's good. But in the pro game you'd have you know the execution. Part of it taking care you'd -- you know field position in the kicking game all come -- I mean he's just play a fifth quarter man just play. Play the whole fifteen minutes even if you score first overtime the other -- got a shot it still be your team to stop him. It's it would -- mini version of the sixty minute game complete with a strategy and everything else that comes along with it. That's how you should settle in overtime. Agree -- disagree web radio. James in Roanoke rapids is I don't think it'll be the end of any chances and Patriots making the playoffs if they lose in the game. Even with the loss last Thursday at -- on glimmer of the real possibility of them winning. Let's play Miami after having extra time to prepare. -- it gives them a real good chance at a win. Then they play Pittsburgh at home they have only one team left on the schedule that may have a real chance at beating them and that's Arizona in Gillette. -- some of the twenty. That's a warm weather team come to play at a very cold and maybe even knowing New England. It and it's Patriots so even if they don't lose one more do you really think they can make the playoffs with a 115 record. And I you know James. You know you bring a very good points I think it is touch it is a little bit. It if they did lose this Sunday. And they did go six you know at eleven a five wood they get -- Probably. But it's not guaranteed. It depends on what the Jets and the Dolphins do. Keep in mind now you know you're even with the Jets and -- actually probably be behind the Jets because they -- probably finish better in three and three in the division. And that's the best the Patriots could do if they lose. You're going to be two games behind the Dolphins so if the -- unless the Dolphins are ten and sick you lose a tiebreaker with Miami okay. In the Dolphins -- as we you know we 74. They have to finish ten and six and you have to win out. To finish ahead of them. I'm sure you can see. That the deck is kind of stacked against you hear it it's not impossible. It is certainly possible but I think you know gotten it will be will be very very difficult. And I'm going on record as saying if the Patriots lose this Sunday they won't make the playoffs. I do not believe they will. If you couple the fact the Patriots lose this Sunday and the Jets actually beat Tennessee no shot. No shot because the Jets are going to win the division that would be my thought is -- still football to be played yet. Is there still time to rally yes I mean. Mathematically speaking sure the Jets you know if they win this weekend. They would be eight and three and could they lose five -- what of course -- mathematically it's certainly would be possible. So mathematically no the Patriots would not be eliminated I'm aware of that but for all practical purposes -- think that they would. Disagreeing feel free to what that is kind of how I look at it at this stage of the game. Bomb. Another email here this from -- opened nova Scotia says you know unless we know Brady will not be back. Franchising Cassel would just be plain stupid. Padgett spent some smart money on before it. I think the pats have a good opportunity to build a great defense around Mayo and some of the of the younger players -- of course it looks like -- go to the Jets than give him everything he wants. -- You talked little about this yesterday. With a -- you might put the franchise tag on him know that this is an atomic conversation. Amongst many of you in the POW guys tackled this as well. Oh look here's the thing. You've got you're going to have I believe. We were talking about the salary cap not knowing what the number -- yesterday it looked into that a little bit further the Patriots going to have some -- Somewhere around twenty million dollars in cap room. For the next season if you sign castle in be franchised him he'd probably come in at about eleven million dollars on the cap. -- you've got the cap room apparently. To be able to handle it if you decide you want to do now visit take away from some of the things you want to do probably. What I'm saying here is is that you know first and foremost you have to determine whether or not Tom Brady's going to be able to. The anywhere close to where he was before the injury and I think we all realize now. That that's not a different. We've seen this happen with quarterbacks in the injuries and it does take him at least a year sometimes. Two. Before they can be there old selves Ian and what's Tom Brady shelf like 567. Years left in the NFL if we're lucky probably. So I think it'd probably Bears at least consideration. And then if you decide to franchise and don't they -- really going to hold onto him all right my guess would be if they comply the bag they're going to try to work a deal. No and I don't think he's going to be somebody's willing to give them 21 round draft picks but I think you've got to trade. With somebody -- we talking about this yesterday as well what -- that you -- a trade with somebody for potentially. A first round pick. On if not a first then maybe you know a second and third -- combination of something for him. A but I think you could probably cut yourself dealing get something for him and so. You know yeah you'd take the cap hit but yes you'd get something for him so if you going to lose him. You definitely want to get something out I mean after you put the sweat equity into making Matt Cassel what he is did you not. Course she did. So why should the Patriots get something for that sweat -- you put into you know making him a viable entity as a starter in the NFL. You're absolutely -- to the franchise and fine if that's an organization decision they want to do that's fine but get some the foreign work out a deal. And you don't franchise and -- you feel like you've got to deal or two. In the -- And probably a couple wheels because that way that you get two teams playing off of each other desperate to go after a guy like -- San Francisco comes to mind I mean if -- the Jets -- it's the Jets letting go. Surely would add spice again to a rival that really doesn't need it right. I again my own personal opinion mention the shift in my apartment is that Favre. Does not go up this year and it's really the only way I think Favre actually stepped down as if the Jets win the Super Bowl that I think he'd. He might step aside and go out the winner I think that's the only shot. If Favre has taken to his guns and retiring as the only shot. Otherwise I think he comes back at least for one more. Mean that kind of makes sense doesn't it. -- So I think one of the Jets having it's kind of a moot point I don't -- on the the Jets are going to be in the market for smart not this next year. -- and look elsewhere for another team. -- potential for quarterback and that's who the Patriots could potentially deal -- if they decide to franchise Cassel. So that's what we're looking for yes I totally agree -- you've got an opportunity to build you know around a guy like -- defensively. I would love to see them you know go after guy you know obviously I'm I'm partial to guys like Bryant -- open Texas who has. In that speed personified on the end. You know he's a big duty -- 160 pounds but then again you know but that was Thomas is a big dude also. You know could you make him an outside linebacker in a 34 scheme I think you probably could. Specially if you get a closer look at him come minds right. I think what you're looking for though and if he's not available we -- the Patriots are picking you look at -- I think somebody who's got some speed because what are the knock on the Patriots defense. What are you hear the team St. what are the Jets players said last week going into the game. Pictures too old and slow."
[47:57]" Woman do something about that. Get younger get faster."
[48:03]" You look for those edge guys find the edge guys. Whether there you know defensive ends in college where he could put down an outside linebacker in the 34 scheme. We find someone who is a stand up you know you know or being up three point they have defensive end. You know one or the other you find a way to do that I think you also realize that they could still use some help in the middle defensively. But I have been able account Tedy Bruschi that much longer maybe maybe not anymore you're. And then defensive back I mean do we even need to go there we know that there definitive need their. Means to see what might come available free agent market in -- season. You know in the secondary. You gotta you gotta -- some but -- sure cornerbacks so mean there's a ton of stuff there. Actually the -- Ocalan safety wise I do and that's even without. Rodney Harrison on the -- fully expects -- to retire but. I think -- be okay at safety keep in mind you know that -- you know Tank Williams to might be an option there and and so I I I I think they'll be fine at safety. All of which potentially better at safety in the -- corner but you need -- cornerback spot and you need to get faster. In addition to being on the I think there's still okay at the tackle spot. Even -- you know at times. I don't think anybody's been terribly happy with the way the tackles have operated. But I think potentially good but they're still okay there. Still young enough there. I want to -- edge guys I want to corner. -- want to see edge in the front seven -- edge in the backfield. That's when I want to see. To improve defensively for next those them but the glaring glaring weaknesses. Offensively -- little depth on the offensive line and running back let's face it that's it. Now I'm not entirely certain. I'm kind of speaking off -- my -- here based in the couple things I've read in the past I think Anquan Bolden. Is a free agent I'd love to see the papers go after him. In put him on one side. In Randy Moss on the other would you not I mean can you mean. That would be every bit as good as you Terrell Owens and in in Roy Williams at Dallas which may I think is pretty good 12 punch. You know at wide receiver. But I think that would be every bit as good as. I loved them I don't know if the Patriots are able to do that you know with. You know the extra cap room they might have -- By all means that would certainly be. A consideration if you're able -- you don't for Nadal somehow some way. But yeah definitely offensive line can still use a good young linemen I think somebody with you know. You know. Mid range draft pick and then you -- running back. They need another running back I don't think they'll go get the running back I do believe as I said yesterday Erica. I do believe they -- once more only one more year -- finally your view of his deal of his rookie deal. A CP TV. Deal that go to guy. You and I both know that's going to turn out but I think he'll give him that year. Chad Jackson in part to what I think but okay. At pick your prerogative after all he is for current draft pick and you have a tendency to let first round draft picks and themselves right until we just have nothing left. And then you'd discarded and I think that's what they'll do. Same thing with Benjamin Watson as we -- talking about yesterday how he's -- huge disappointment I'm ready to -- Watson in that same category. With Maroney in terms of being you know and under achiever. But the fact is that he's a first round trip tickets or in home he's going to get every opportunity to keep his job before they discard him. In the consider themselves a failure for having drafted him in the first place. They'll get extra time -- both of those guys. So but the office is still there should calm anyway so that was good thought provoking email or by appreciate. You know the comments it would because. Kind of gets -- off spot and he -- from time to time. When we get another one in here before we take time out of this and go from different spot is. You know the easiest way to fix the overtime would be to -- give the other team. The chance to match or exceed the first possession. If they do the game is over if they don't you continue until the fifteen minutes is up. You know that's that's that's the actual suggestion I hear most often for most people. Excellent and we do we make it even -- what you're claiming -- all right let's say you know for instance we'll take last week's game of the Jets in mind -- right. Jets came down and scored a field. They took what was -- nine minutes literally minutes off the clock to Duke it. To the papers that would have seven minutes and change six minutes and change. To at least kick a field but of the Patriots score a touchdown in the six minutes they went again. That makes sense deal I think that's because that way you have a chance. To keep the game shorter. And finish in less than the allotted fifteen minutes of time in the overtime. And both teams. Both teams get a chance with the with the football. So it's really a modified version of the college game because in the college game you start on the 25 yard line right. Into the kick a field it's great but the other team they get their possession of the punt at St. -- about Garland this -- touchdown games over. But you keep playing if you match and feel Google or touchdown for touchdown. And then after the second overtime to go around complete. If you scored touchdown you have to go for -- if you make it the other team has scored a touchdown and convert the two point conversion to move into the fourth overtime. In in a sense this would be an elongated version of that. So you've probably still play the fifteen minutes but you at least have a chance. To keep it shorter. Than fifteen minutes a lot of that actually Todd may be the way if they changed the rules. And a -- and that will I think they should take a look at it in the off season competition committee should definitely look at it. But if they do change the rules my guess would be your suggestion would probably be. The one that would be most popular."
[54:19]" That doesn't mean they're going to do it."
[54:22]" But this way you know all right you got fifteen minutes going to play each team is guaranteed. One possession. First team that you know as the ball if they score the other team gets there one position to match it but if the ex teammates. They win. I unique court to stand kickers extra point the other team it let's say you get Lleyton in overtime right. But so you got like thirty seconds left and in you're down by the extra point you can go over to if you need to win right. Eagle for two to win again right there and you know the end of the overtime so yeah I I think that's that's probably going to be the most popular. My guess is that they'll figure out a way to either utilized that one that's suggestion or the -- plentiful quarter and if you don't. You know have a winner after one quarter in the game -- want to stay tied but you know it's -- like all the what the hell we just fifteen minutes for. What you're given teams at least a chance to do. Because it's conceivable you played over eighteen minutes same way right. And nobody -- scored just like we saw in the Philadelphia. Since that game he could happen. [1:00:42]" Number -- of the playbook on Patriots dot com radio on John Brooks. Web radio -- Patriots dot com. He's our email address 585437482. Is our telephone number and we're going over course the Miami Dolphins and looking back a little bit at them. What has been certainly an eventful 2008. Thus far the Patriots. And we are also trying to do you know solve the ills of the NFL and how we would attack over time. Since there apparently more than just a few players are in this league that don't understand what the rules are. I mean them -- elevate a total from the opening out the program today you know in the Patriots locker missed a couple of choice guys and frankly they were unaware. That -- overtime rule is would it -- as first team score and you're done. You know or that it doesn't just keep going at the end of fifteen minutes. You know it's only sudden death in the playoffs you know -- just keeps going interminable. You know I realize it doesn't happen all that often you never really get -- it's been six years and we had a spot in the NFL but. Goodness I mean you know don't you consider that sort of a basic things anyway that's always been talking about on the opening our program today amongst the items and and and the other aspect to all is as you know. Patriots got -- just scratched. By the Dolphins back in week three. It was stunning. In its calm completeness. It was shocking because the Patriots were frankly not even in the game I mean it was just. It was just what will talk about a soccer parts of the solar -- that's what was the entire organization and it pumped life at the same time into the Dolphins. Whereas we've mentioned they they won six of the last eight. Starting with that week. And now they're dead even with Patriots in the standings game behind the Jets AFC east. And if they beat the Patriots they would have swept them. Be the fourteenth time. That the Dolphins will swept the Patriots in a single year Patriots of which were the Dolphins six times previously so. You know the Dolphins as we all know those of us that go back a ways with this franchise. Always have long been considered the heat thorn in the side of the Patriots whereas I think we all like the really believe that the Jets might be our most hated rival. Surely within the division. The Dolphins have really. Been the -- they -- the ones that have dealt but most. I think punishment to the Patriots over the years. And maybe we just sort of dismissed the Dolphins as a rival recently because the Dolphins have been down and almost out -- the Patriots have just crushed them but. Then again that really hasn't necessarily LB in the case. I mean because when you go back you know in two you know. Recent history. Honestly this is the 87 time in history. That these two teams faced off 4030 years division foes -- Patriots have won ten of the last fifteen games. All overall. Against Miami. But the Dolphins have also won 32 of the previous 42 they played all time in south Florida. 32 out of 42 overall in south -- and Patriots. I -- you know. We all know bit. Playing in Miami has certainly been one of the worst places for the Patriots to two to try to get a win over the years. And that probably still the case. But I think we also know that it is been less so in the last few years that the Dolphins have been down. And the Dolphins had a chance that a return the favor which they did greatly back in week three they -- that won one game regular season when streak. I don't know that that really means a lot to the players in the locker room. It may mean more to someone like you moron. But -- certain I feel fairly certain that somebody in that locker -- going to remember. That you don't want they really beat the you know one out of us and and we have something to prove here we do have something to show. I just question when another Patriots have both as a college you be able to show because there's so banged up and eat in in. You know some facets of the game."
[1:05:12]" And again I'll get back to original point was me in the opening day you know the Dolphins are not as bad as they were. As the record indicated they were they may not be as good as -- written it is -- Albert they're not as bad as they were a year ago. The probably close to being good so. In that regard on I have to admit that this is. You know. To me this is a good old fashion eight at the family feud coming up and we should be kind of flow like that this and and maybe would. I don't I don't sensed the emotion. For this game that we even had going into the Jets game a week eagle in my wrong about this do you feel as a fan how do you feel about this game. Are you getting psyched up for it. You hate the Dolphins or did you wear a squished the fish T shirt back in the eighties and in. How do you feel about Davis. But even if they lose this under the season's not over the code goes six because -- extra they could go eleven and five they could stomach what what course they cool it. But does anybody see what IC."
[1:06:32]" Or might just totally way -- easier. -- me and let me know what I -- lord -- stand on its web radio at Patriots dot com. Are three questions of the day and we got them gym in Florida who wants to blow. And to those particular issues today to number one to answer your question first I am impressed. That the Patriots are six and four and still in the thick of -- for the AFC east crown or wild card in spite of so many injuries. And loss of marquis stars. Com. To me I'd have the seat I don't think that would probably be the overwhelming. Bought. The people are still impressed at the 64 although like I told you in the opening our. My initial impression is that I'm disappointed with the fact the 64 -- I expected more out of the defects. No I did not expect Tom Brady -- No I didn't really expect as much as we've gotten out of Matt Cassel I didn't. What I also expected that this these pins would be the part of the team that would carry the team. And get them to ten wins minimum. And get them into the playoffs one way or the other that -- that was my minimum expectation that was my reevaluation. Of -- team. After Brady went down and we want."
[1:07:51]" And if they lose this game -- six and five they lose this game on Sunday to Miami to six and five. And they've got a real struggled to get the ten and six. -- it sure will they don't we don't know. But I'm still largely left with a disappointing --"
[1:08:12]" What about you. Disappointment or are you impressed. With what they've done this one time all things being considered here. Jim also says my biggest surprise in the week three loss to Miami is how poorly the pats played no swagger no energy. They were just flat and they seem to lay down to winless team at home. And Pennington seemed to complete every pass he attempted. And the wildcat worked clicked consistently. And the offense played conservatively. Even after they fell way behind. Young. They they're they it was like that they didn't game plan properly. They had no clue how to combat and then again. Had that been -- twenty to thirteen game as opposed to 3813. Million had an opportunity late in the game maybe for a drive. I don't think anybody would even confident they could have done it why because and opened the game plan enough for Matt Cassel. -- this team to be able to drive down the field on Miami. This week when he was still you don't -- learning as we go in there when he deep routes we were complaining about the fact that he wasn't throwing -- an insult. They just hadn't given him I think the full play -- that he probably has now. -- only they could come back even if they had been in position to come back. So there is a progression. Certainly offensively. There's been a regression I think the fans globally if it's pretty hard regressed Mueller thirty points -- play bad that day anyway."
[1:09:42]" But. Yeah they they were definitely flat and that sort of is what I was talking about my overall impression week three as he got beat 25 at home. How the -- that happen."
[1:09:54]" At least has asked for overtime on the traditionalist and sports. I tend to hate to rule changes in general in sudden death overtime as it exists isn't perfect. But I don't like the idea of giving both teams a shot on offense. Or even an extra overtime period is a perfect either wind home field crowd could favor one team over the other is well for example. Well okay traditionalist and sports but I think you know what I consider myself as old school as the next guy Jim. But. You know. There is no such thing as you know being a funny Dodi but a you know. I mean you can be too old school that you have to realize that there are ways to improve. An already pretty good sport. And there are ways to make rules better not only for the entertainment value for -- die but also for the players. To give them. A better opportunity to win number one in May be maybe even to stay healthier and they're four to play longer. Stretch out their careers who knows. So I just I think we all realize that nobody likes the overtime rule only NFL nobody really likes it we just kind of deal with a because. Well the -- of the old phrase right here it is what it is. They can make it better and it wouldn't take much to make it better. You need to great examples today how to make the overtime better."
[1:11:18]" Are really think the competition committee needs to step up and take a look at this."
[1:11:22]" Especially glad that -- a lot of guys that -- only don't even know what the -- going all the overtime and in all the rule that's just that's just ridiculous. It tells me but because they don't even -- the rule. There's something wrong with the ruled that win."
[1:11:41]" Doesn't count logic dictate that the -- so okay you're you're not wrong. You're not wrong rule changes yes but I mean it was a rule change when they did away with ties anyway decided heaven overtime in the regular season. So you really want to get old school and wipe out overtime all together. Let's keep the time in the NFL. In only use overtime in a playoff game where you play until somebody scored. Like that classic Kansas City Miami game back in the mid seventies."
[1:12:14]" War early very early lead to retreat. A game you know obviously went into double overtime. Longest game in NFL history. Actually -- quarters right almost -- quarter and around their and again I'm just -- Thelma and almost on remembrance here. But. Yeah in overtime you know in the playoffs you're gonna play until somebody scores wins that's it. Because you can't have -- but the regular season well aren't you really want to be old school -- you play with ties because that's the -- used to be. If you're going to have an overtime you need to give I think teams an opportunity to win it. You don't want to game decided by a mere flip of the coin which is really what happened this last Thursday against the Jets. If you. Retool the overtime. But you give both teams a chance to win it or even lose it on the field. And you take the chance. Out of it. You take the mere coin flip aspect of it. Out of it and yes I do get the fact well you know if your unlocked you know when you lose the coin flip open your defense has to step up and if you don't that you deserve to lose. I don't necessarily disagree with the that is a good point. But you don't play the previous sixty minutes like that and I think that's really where I'm coming from Jim. You don't play the previous sixteen hits like that. So if you don't play the previous sixty like that why do you play the last fifteen like that. If you're going to try to keep over time. As true. To regulation as possible and both teams must have the ball."

And it frequent contributor to Patriots playbook Harvey Greene Harvey it's great to visit -- you thanks for the time in an -- was busy week ago."
[1:20:53]" Now did it to. It's a big game but it's night -- a lot of thrust. Since we've had one like this so it's enjoyable a lot of attention focused on the game and on the team and that's player -- the spasms."
[1:21:04]" Absolutely and secondly he's been the first question -- because. I know the Dolphins now it's action for having won six of the last decade and they had a resounding win back in week three that we spent a lot of time obviously talking about over the last. They're two fact is is that the Dolphins are relevant again and you guys get the sense now that. That's really -- over relief or does it feel to be relevant again maybe even in your -- marketplace."
[1:21:28]" Well to be honest the last probably hasn't been an aberration I've been here twenty years in the first fifteen. I never had the losing reckoned with this -- so we -- relevant locally. And we irrelevant nationally it was enjoyable because the gains against the Patriots and and the Jets in the -- all meant a lot you know we would point to those games. I think fans of the opposing team pointed -- visits in each of those three cities. And the last couple Beers kind of to the edge off of that when we're almost an afterthought here and in the -- Agassi so it's nice where people are talking about despite its nice that people were looking at us with a sense of respect. Frankly one of fifteen it's good but those memories behind -- I think. Fans here are certainly are excited knowing about what we're doing now but about the direction the team is headed I think they have faith in Indian people like Tony Sparano and Bill Parcells jet pilots. That are excited about the present but we're also excited about the future."
[1:22:19]" All right let's go back to that we three were just a moment -- much to the chagrin I know of some of the Patriots fans are listening but. What stands out most in your mind that's the question that I best paid pats fans today what stands out most about that we three."
[1:22:32]" I think the biggest thing for us as it gave -- credibility with federal building you know we're coming off one and fifteen we have a whole whole change of coaches here. And our culture change and you know try to instill something nobody knew that much about Tony nobody knew that much about some of the players that we brought in. I'm even -- at that point was still an unknown quantity to us. And when your one at fifteen and then you start off only and so. Obviously people worst time to say okay these people know what they're doing was was getting contender right thing. You know what kind of play to expect from Joey Porter what about some -- rookies like Jake Long. And I think the win against the Patriots more than anything else gave us a a sense as a team. That yes that fact we have turned Cornel but it of people here do know what they're doing that we brought -- some quality people we have some good leadership. And that fact we are on the right track and I think even Coach -- said that really helped. -- everyone here buy into everything collectively that we do know what we're doing and we are headed in the right direction I think if we had lost that game and dropped only three. You know that might have been some additional questions but that put -- that would be in the Patriots gave us. Some instant credibility and I think we're able to build off of that and that really helped us come together as a team."
[1:23:46]" So certainly that game served as a catalyst. Four where you are now."
[1:23:51]" And that's not to say it would not happen the next game I think we we played well enough that a lot of our games where we would have won it. Most of the ones we did anyway so right now I think we were headed. In the right direction -- at the debts or to do was is give us credibility like quicker. And did LA that the Patriots for the last five years in the gold standard in appellate if you could measure up to them. Even over sixty minutes that you must do something right and so when we were able to beat them on the road. I think we came back and useful they would say one of us you know why why aren't we the team. That -- Feels that we won every game -- where I know every team of the week believe that is they should. But I think here were able stock answer that question a little more positively. And we're a little more sense that and the fact we we knew were doing."
[1:24:36]" I can certainly pick up some of the reasons why I I believed. Your team has those certainly come to the forefront mound and at real contender. In the AFC east. Ronnie Brown being healthy Ricky Williams -- him back to you don't move closer to its former self Chad Pennington -- reported sort of mention coming and giving you. Solid if not spectacular quarterback play. I also think that you've had guys. In roles fulfill -- great camera real maybe let's say a night in a possession type receiver. -- role of Ted Ginn learning how to be a big play kind of guy. Defensively Joey Porter stepping up and being a big play guy on the other -- to sell the you have guys now that are failing. Positions on the team that they needed to fulfill in order to be successful."
[1:25:22]" No question about -- it's a real solid indication of why we have turned things around to an extent you know Joey Porter for example. Struggled last year -- 43. You know we traded Jason Taylor. Went to a 34 put -- weak side in which is where he played at Pittsburgh and also he's flourished. In part because he's playing position he used to playing at one where he can now. Take advantage of of matchup that did exist for a year ago that allowed for example on on on the Church interaction. To have a guy like Matt Roth who has -- the first year ago now play -- strong sided in their three point now he's excelled as well so I think a lot of it is -- that. Where players who were put in the right places. And have been able to take advantage of nine their ability but of the position that they're putting and to be able to use the ability and as a way to maybe one a year ago obviously any offensive side you know chance and has a perfect example of that you know what we know. How good he can -- I think he's made a player like Ted -- Who's only in the second year is still learning how to play wide receiver -- a guy like -- camera L he's making them better players and it might have been a different situations I think. The reason we have played so well as we are getting the right people in the right place and we're maximizing. The abilities they have to contribute whatever we're asking him to do."
[1:26:38]" green is the senior vice president of media relations for the Miami Dolphins visiting with us here in said the Patriots playbook -- let me start first vault with Joey Porter. And are there days when you wish he just wouldn't say anything."
[1:26:52]" You know Jerry Porter minded guy out here about ten years ago on no Patriot fans remember well that's Bryan Cox. And you know there there -- days you wish that they would keep quiet but that's who they are that's what makes it's great players you know what Bryan Cox. -- people mad at him I don't know that you would be as as as couple players who was on the field I didn't say about Joey these. These types of players thrive under that type pressure. That they like going it to somebody else's house and -- that the other ones in charge and that's really maybe what makes them. As as good as they are so I at this point when -- in the -- I don't think you know -- change very much know what he's doing what I likeable little more subdued yet but not the expense for my cost a couple of sacks I think -- you know Julius Julius and and the opinions last year -- in -- had a block that no bite. It'll -- you can't say very much at least this year he's able to back up on the field the team to what extent has has been able play like they're behind."
[1:27:48]" You know Heath Evans was quoted in our locker room yesterday I don't know maybe Columbia. Florida newspaper -- newspapers today in fact that you don't want. He doesn't my enjoyed talking at all why because he's backing it up but just -- of what you said the fact is he's earned the right. With the sacks that he's had leaving the AFC and the performance of the team he's earned the right to -- a little bit and it's actually the Patriots job to force him to be quiet."
[1:28:12]" Yeah I -- quiet last year he only talked early guaranteed a win which we didn't get. And and you know admitted then that it's tough to talk when he can't back it up. You know but -- said that there are some guys on this team why can't we don't say quite as much. Also played at a high level slide out about -- very sure that what is needed to to have the other."
[1:28:32]" Pitcher who's going to surprise in a positive sense on the defensive side of the ball in addition to what -- rays done that maybe he wasn't quite expected of him in your estimation."
[1:28:42]" Pick one guy who has really stepped up has played -- chanting crowd you know with Zach Thomas Condit what to change your defensive scheme."
[1:28:49]" Channing has kind of taken on -- Alicia brawl and he's he's making all these tackle that you really don't."
[1:28:55]" See because they're not sacks you know Joey Porter stands out he may have you know four tackles and then into maybe sacks and posted may -- Serious change in May be potentially game changing."
[1:29:07]" You don't see that chanting but -- that they will companies got -- which is exactly what you that would back you wouldn't change a game but he would make mistakes and and it."
[1:29:15]" And he would be the rock of your deep -- to let a guy like Jason kind of freelance get a little bit more the spotlight I think it is an issue with Joey. Play that Jason Taylor all of you know getting a lot more that spotlight because of sacks and then somebody would have to account for. But Channing really doing all the dirty work and at the end of the day being a guy who your defense has been sent to around."
[1:29:35]" What has a guy like Yeremiah Bell meant to your second in terms of kind of keeping everybody together in in being. A force really and -- well --"
[1:29:46]" I think -- is is looking at how much we missed O'Meara nobody was -- you know -- this year has played you know has played well. Native native really against it -- play two point conversion and a week ago. He's a veteran back there I think our defensive backfield collectively. Have surprised people and it's a one -- where we really haven't had. What are changeover between you know Will Allen and Yeremiah. Still you know Jason -- coming back. -- are top top guys the guys were here -- don't I think that they stepped up the -- play. Maybe having a little more time together maybe a little a little different type of defensive scheme. I think people looked at -- potential Achilles heel and it actually turn now to be a pretty good strips."
[1:30:30]" Two names off visibly owner to deal with the first one being Ronnie Brown in the fact that he's healthy he looks like the Ronnie Brown of old is he."
[1:30:37]" But -- already you've got a lot I don't know I told help bring up to work wildcats on a threat at an. Will I felt good it's it's really that it happened right around I've figured it would have to come out they'll. Running as you might remember had a great season -- before -- hurt after I think seven games the and finally he argues that it a horrible year and and and integrated that he had. People talk about having a year a year and a half minimally to come back from well on in the last in the year Ronnie has shown on the form that that he did a year ago he's been. Great for a but the best thing about -- in an eternal and Rickey is well Ricky Williams is that they have a great relationship with each other and that's critical because."
[1:31:17]" initially you've got to win with two backs. And and Ronny doesn't have a needle Ricky does have a -- isn't saying I need the ball point five times. Rickey who gained 1800 yards when your in this league advancing and I want to -- star. They've both complement each other to get along well together different on and off the field and neither one is complaining when the other ones playing in -- factors support but did you."
[1:31:39]" So having both players."
[1:31:41]" Sharing their position and both -- about the common goal winning games not personal statistics has made a difference really."
[1:31:49]" That you might have been able to do with -- had two different types of players you know Ronnie was used to splitting the load. With Cadillac -- so this is making -- to him but Ricky really had and so. Four for Ricky to accept that and for running at this level it teetering and last year. Also understand that he's better at all that we society and Israeli at testimony to to be the mental. How -- that also plays kept putting winning and that any personal statistics."
[1:32:14]" Yeah that is a great 12 punch got to admit that the other player wanted to ask about his Jake Long and how his progression is come along to me. It seemed to go along swimmingly well because anytime you don't talk about offensive -- that probably tell you something right there."
[1:32:29]" I was -- at the end of again there's nobody around his locker. As the Jake that's good news because if there are people around your locker they would probably ask about holding penalty or sack he gave up. Right of affecting your invisible course of the game. Not achieved its time and actually it is funny Bret chicks came up because I obviously. I don't watch up it's supply and am much am -- I think most fans -- alliance our coach a couple of days ago hey I haven't seen Jake Long really -- been playing. These said he rarely been great he's he's you know he's he's he's always been a good -- protector. He was that way in Michigan. But he is learning a lot about past you know that. Protected the quarterback and -- He's rarely went had to use his speed that he is leverage and he's really come along way so I think we're very happy with what he's done. He's worked on the time he's been in the league. I think he's guided they'll just get better and better and hopefully somebody will toward about as far as may have left tackle spot the next decade but he played the level we hoped he would -- still working to get even better."
[1:33:28]" And how has Tony Sparano handled this run of success in the big come. The matter of factly to him fortieth think he's genuinely surprised that it's happened apparently as quickly as it is."
[1:33:37]" Well you know I. I think everyone was surprised obviously coming off of one of fifteen year. You know I think anyone -- it would -- until they were they thought we'd be six to fourteen points."
[1:33:48]" With the exception being our coach kept our players as -- said earlier. Ponies manager has been three words that he's preached from day one."
[1:33:57]" That is why not us."
[1:34:00]" And Surtain. In Brazil -- press conference you know game ended and Jeff Ireland and Bill Parcells are patient they didn't come here to rebuild. They came here to win obviously they -- the challenges in front of them and nobody's getting ourselves that we you know we're where we want to they would still the we have a long way to go and we still need to get better. But I think everyone here expected us to play at a higher level than anyone outside the building did as it is he said why not us and I think. You know we're we you'd commit every game expecting to win I think for the most part we played a level that their Coach Sparano has not only --"
[1:34:33]" Of the team that frankly demanded of them and I think they've responded in kind."
[1:34:38]" We do have the you know the nah I guess for lack of a phrase here -- family feuding going on within the AFC east. With the Jets now the top in the patrons in the Dolphins right behind. And Buffalo Bills are still not too far behind. Is that something you guys expected that you could be a part of this and I mean really when it comes down -- breast."
[1:34:57]" Good luck everyone knew that the Patriots were had chosen by the position a year ago I mean you know we were struggling and and so -- the Jets -- the bills but I think if you look at it that at the leadership that these three clubs have. That you don't expect any of these teams to beat down for very long you know just get Brett Favre. You know the bills we knew were going to get better they're playing well certain points last year where -- and whether we can keep our department I think. You've got a division which is competitive as any in the NFL and I think it's testimony it to the leadership. And the coaching staffs of each of the fourteen I think you're going to see as for why -- we were very young team. The bill certainly on team. The Patriots have always been outstanding in the Jets there are now finding their stride so. You know like assisting a dog fight for any first through fourth place for the next two years that's what makes it fun. You know I I don't think -- that as a team secure ahead of her body else it's great. But I think the fans kind of virtually every game every game and it ceased being of blood feud because. Every game is so meaningful for tiebreaker -- one games separate person for a that's what's great about this league is every game so critically can't afford to adapt awful."
[1:36:07]" Have the fans come back having embraced all of us have they been. You know this kind of waiting in the wings to say show me in in actually get on the field and and do something do you feel like they're back now."
[1:36:17]" Yeah I think our fans the last couple games that has really start to -- and you know obviously there were some skepticism. As as. They expected when he had a year like we did last season you know Brett. I think having some people having Chad Pennington having Joey Porter having Bill Parcells there are some people here that have a history of success this week. I think when they start to show that that history is continuing here in Miami -- starting to buy in now and in the last couple of weeks. You know we've seen a turnaround this sense of how much talked terrorism which -- support we're getting. And how much repentance not to think about -- by the same token you've got to be careful because as his coach pearls that they they don't have you got trophies for winning six games. And you know if you start buying into hyperbole eating and eating the cheese is as we sit around here. You start thinking you're better than you actually are going to cause problems so. You know on one hand it's great -- and is excited about what we're doing but by the same token frankly we have accomplished anything yet six wins as long ways -- where we want to be."
[1:37:18]" And looking for number seven this weekend Harvey. Thanks again for the time it's always appreciated."
[1:37:22]" Happy to talking guys we'll report coming up wherever you that's coming down here on Sunday."
[1:37:26]" Absolutely you've got to serve thank you thanks Harvey Greene senior vice president media relations for the Miami Dolphins. Visiting with us here -- the play book again as he does usually and Dolphins -- glad that he could make a little time -- In his scheduled during the course today it is a big game. Make no bones about -- it's a big game it's a big game also from Miami because frankly as we've sort of oh lead into today. This game for them can legitimize. There. This game means. Almost not as much in my own personal opinion as it does for the Patriots but almost does because as I that he can stamped them as legitimate. Contenders now in the AFC east but in the AFC. Theory it. And it gives them an opportunity potentially to compete with the Jets for the division title if they beat the Patriots. Now Paul Perillo was talking about this during PFW in progress earlier today I caught the tail end of the conversation you may have heard -- but. He said if that if the Dolphins win this this really signify a turning of the power greeted in the age of east. I would agree with Paul to the extent that no -- it has because. Would anybody think. The Jets the Dolphins might be what they are if Tom Brady were healthy. Granted his being hill -- doesn't affect whether they win or lose. What I think it's within reason to say if Brady were healthy. The Patriots. Probably don't lose that Jets game this past Thursday and they probably. We'll certainly let us say it won't be 3813. If he's part of that game back on week three maybe the Dolphins -- in an upset. They've done it before with poverty is quarterback so I guess it's conceivable they could've still done it. You know in September of this year. While -- the benefit of the doubt on that if those two you know games that turn out to be wins the other way around well and obviously the Jets are in first place and the Dolphins are tied the Patriots right now. So it's hard to say that until. May be those two teams beat the Patriots with the Patriots sort of kind of you know at least close to full strength. He'd be hard. To really say the balance of power has turned but I believe that will be the story of the Patriots lose this game on Sunday. That will be the story that will ring throughout the NFL being belonged to which -- dead. Long live the new kings of the area of east."
[1:39:50]" Kids that's why. Sunday is so important. To the Patriots."
[1:39:58]" They need to hold -- not only a the statistical mathematical Ed -- Which they would still have if they win this game on Sunday but they will also make sure that every one including their own divisional rival's nose. We may be beating up. What we're still the Patriots. It's message sending time. What's the big question is -- the Patriots have enough left in them to send that message to the Dolphins. I we will while wrap up our show today by listening into the conference call with Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano. Completed just a little while ago members of the Patriots media at Gillette Stadium will what you. I hear the question that they had to fire for the head coach the Dolphins it to six and four and certainly sitting in pretty good stead within the confines of the AFC east. Tomorrow's program. Will probably get to Ronnie Brown's conference call from the Dolphins with the Patriots media we hope to hook up again would they -- or apologize again for that today. And there will be there will be. -- select repairs mark that I can 99910%. Guarantee about Russell join us as he normally does on Thursdays yeah -- know -- and he'll be there will find it will track him down. It's television loss report practices will tomorrow from the PFW guys all right so let's wrap it up today with the head coach Miami Dolphins Tony Sparano."
[1:41:23]" Can you talk about the difference between. Lessons face the Patriots your golf knowledge you start doing. We saw how emotionally where to get that first win. How different is it now -- and usually ask yourself as a as a contender."
[1:41:38]" Now probably started like disfigured. We're playing a little bit better right now shall -- you know what I think what you come in here as a new coach and any coach. You know it has done -- for the first time mostly at the same thing. -- to validate what it is that you've done. Need to win some games that. It'll I just happened indeed first time that we want to game shall. They -- personal validation to do things that we were trying to get done here. -- at our age of culture."
[1:42:10]" The Jets -- top of the division. And anyway he's still Mancuso against the Patriots and consistent."
[1:42:18]" Orchard do -- the other day a bit about I. You don't -- culprits. You know Wednesday. We still in order to get to where you need speed. -- the Patriots. And I understand where the Jets are but. It'll still in this recent columns or where the other conference fortunately."
[1:42:41]" Much you know this is an overused word confidence of the team -- straight wins and last TB -- very close."
[1:42:49]" Well they they're confident you're gonna you have to win a book yet to win games bunch of different ways. Initially get all of it certainly need to try to beat -- need to be able to each of people that. -- maybe you're expected to be -- need to win some close games at some point. It'll that you need to be somebody then maybe you're not supposed to be so. You know and we've been able to do some of those things right now -- I think there's a little bit of confidence they're put surely not cockiness just. Hill golf and that's I think cultural. -- any team whether had some success."
[1:43:24]" Who's. Well I guess everybody gets credit for lack of turnovers you guys -- kind of it's here. I mean every every coach wants to emphasize and what's -- the he didn't know not turn a little over three."
[1:43:36]" Well particularly shall certainly that we talk an awful lot about you know we try to work hard on it practice. You know and not turn -- all -- dominion also people's it will -- you do those things I mean we just really. -- about ball security at all positions. Those type of sanction all. Were fortunate that the people who handle the ball or -- penalties any candidate of course our action. You know any of those other people are receivers were fortunate that that that these guys have been you know pretty trustworthy as far as that goes right now."
[1:44:10]" Notice that Ron is also one of the things he didn't -- was told the team. You're coming to rebuild and want to win football games now is that is that how are you referring to religion culture changed it. He wanted to sell them on seventeen."
[1:44:25]" Yes no question about it that I think it. You know coveted here in this situation that we came in at all and I think a natural reaction was as you were going to war it'll. Maybe rebuild that this thing was going to take some time that you're going to try to do all those things well. Kendall I don't I don't have patience for that title Bill Parcells doesn't Jeff Ireland doesn't -- it'll for a -- it you know we -- we wanted to open and here we wanted to. -- to be able to compete usually just give ourselves a chance to win games -- maybe where this thing goes. You know and that's really what we've what we've done so I mean not having the ball about they have the first that team. It'll that this is something that we wanted to do. You know we're fortunate that. We're able with a couple games -- you know which kicks went right now so they'll give you any trophies in meeting today accomplish what you excellent."
[1:45:19]" Would be fair to say that you've. You're defensive scheme is unleashing. -- recorded an -- in the previous regimes and."
[1:45:29]" Yeah coach Dave said that the Lakers say. You know just -- we came into this league. Really as a 34 outside linebacker. Or I've been -- We were able to -- Courses we could it is natural position -- used back you know Pittsburgh. Shall you know this very seldom do that it helps use of his talents you know to the best of our ability that's important -- of you know -- our scheme you know. Not much different whole lot of then you know the Patriots -- some of these street fourteenth -- outside linebackers can't get that a passer you know luckily have a chance."
[1:46:09]" How much influence. It's Parcells haven't on the -- bases and what are some of that that things just and you being around him it that you learn from him."
[1:46:19]" I've made his influence it'll as far as. You know anything that we do you know from a game played a practice standpoint or any of those things you know there really isn't much there at lest I have a question that may go down and it is great which isn't I -- you know to be able to happen this building. But you know other than that. As far as they or -- London but this is all you know he prepared me. To be in this position without a doubt I think -- some of the greatest that I take control my technique. Would be -- management part of this whole thing you know -- As a young coach well defined that is until finally they gave me just start which. It from me right now. You know kind of like a quarterback and I think. You know -- we do that a little bit just from what he's probably all the way from the gate -- that's ample."
[1:47:12]" I was so it has -- time -- back where's that didn't. Biggest waving you've seen. Parcells in -- this that is."
[1:47:26]" Well I -- I think additional from personnel standpoint. That's probably the British way you know I mean. One of the things that we don't do here and in our players understand issues we continuously toward the bottom of our roster. That's important for us -- at the end of the day. You know whatever we finish our season. We want to make sure that. Which they've -- maybe it was a better 63 that we even start it was so. You know they're continuation. Hurting at the bottom of the roster those type thing you know players culminated. The players going out from a personnel standpoint both he and -- violent I think that's the biggest imprint."
[1:48:08]" What does Chad Pennington accuracy. What is your offense. What -- couldn't get -- that."
[1:48:17]" I've managed -- I think it'll be Julio football team. And particularly young offense shall. You try to cornerback and immediate future road with the football little bits. You know his accuracy the fact that. You know yeah we're out there in the lead right now on first down that first yard shuttle started things. Just giving yourself the opportunity. You don't play throwing can channel it sub situations to catch a ball -- with a that's imported vehicle if the ball was not always good location and good accuracy. And I think you have a little bit of a problem at all or split by the change obviously."
[1:48:59]" the fourth quarter last minute drive like one -- engineered last week and one Cassel engineered against the Jets. How much appreciated secular quarterback."
[1:49:09]" Well I -- awful lot of really do especially amongst Italy's teammates. But I think that. You know these guys go out there and do what they're doing you know Chad Cassel have in this is not by accident you know that he did those kind of situations. -- these guys they get the ball battlefield the fourth quarter. Whether he'd give -- their team a chance to win. It's not by accident he's got an awful lot of time this to a it'll the structure drool over and over again but more importantly you know it's their field study it understand what's going -- You know during those situations I think there's probably separate."
