Dolphins: Tony Sparano Conference Call

Wed, 19 Nov 2008

Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano addresses the New England during his conference call on Wednesday, November 19, 2008. Q: Can you talk about how different it is preparing for this game against the Patriots compared to when you first faced them in week three? You were pretty emotional after getting that first win. How different is it now that you guys have established yourselves as contenders? TS: I don't know if we have done anything like that. I just think we are playing a little bit better right now. One thing is when you come in as a new coach, and any coach that has done this for the first time will say the same thing ‘in order to validate what it is that you have done, you need to win some games.' That just happened to be the first time we won a game so that gave us a little bit of validation to the things that we were trying to get done here within our change of culture. Q: The New York Jets are on top of the AFC East but in a way do you still measure yourself against the Patriots when it comes to this division? TS: I sure do, I told our team the other day that in my mind our [division], in order to get where you need to be the [division] runs through the Patriots. I understand where the [New York] Jets are but till the end of season comes one way or the other the [division] runs through the Patriots. Q: How much confidence has your team built over the four-game winning streaks you guys are on? TS: There is confidence. You have to win games a bunch of different ways in this league. Certainly you need to be able to beat some people that maybe you are expected to beat, win some close games at some point and then you need to beat somebody that maybe you are not suppose to beat. We have been able to do some of those things right now so I think there is a little bit of confidence there. Certainly not cockiness - just confidence. I think it comes with any team when they are having some success. Q: What has been the key to your team's success with ...

Play from 0:01[0:01]" Yeah I don't know very well thank you. Can you talk about the difference between. Lest you face the Patriots are coming up -- and you start and win. We saw how emotionally Marty gets that first win. How different is it now that your understanding yourself as a as a contender."

Play from 0:21[0:21]" All the we've done like just -- good. We're playing a little bit better right now shall amend you know what I think what you come in here as the new coach at City College. You know that has done that's for the first time -- the second thing. And sort of validate what it is that you've done -- game and it'll. That just happened to be the first time that we want to gain sole. They gave -- validation to do things that we were trying to. Get done here. Within our. Change of culture."

Play from 0:53[0:53]" The Jets are on top of the division. -- anyway he's still measure yourself against the Patriots who comes to Houston."

Play from 1:01[1:01]" Well I sure do love that I don't -- TV they have made in my right. You know. Our conference. You know. -- still in order to get to where you need to be. Copper trudged to the Patriots. And I understand where the -- chart. -- indices and columns or where the other coverage fortunately."

Play from 1:23[1:23]" Much notice is an overused word confidence in the team that -- four straight wins and the last two being very close."

Play from 1:32[1:32]" Well they -- confident you're -- you have to win and not yet to win games -- different ways. Initially you know -- certainly need to try to -- need to be able -- people that. -- maybe you're expected to be -- need to win some close games at some point. It'll that you need to be somebody then maybe you're not supposed to -- You know we've been able to do some of those things right now also I think there's a little bit of confidence they're good -- I finished just. Hill golf and that's I think it comes to kill any team whether had some success."

Play from 2:08[2:08]" Well I guess everybody gets critical lack of turnovers you guys have had. This year I mean every every coach wants to emphasize and what's in the -- do not not turn mammography."

Play from 2:19[2:19]" Well articulate something certainly that we -- an awful lot about you know we try to work hard on it practiced. You know and not turn the football or dominion also people say well how do you do those things I mean we just really. Work hard ball security at our positions. Those type of sanction all. We're fortunate that the people who handle the ball for a -- penalties -- any candidate of course our backs and you know any of those other people are receivers were fortunate that -- these guys have been you know pretty trustworthy as far as that goes right now."

Play from 2:53[2:53]" Notice that Ron told us a one of the things he -- he came and was told the team that. You were coming into rebuilding you want to win football games now is that. Is that how are you referring to religion culture change that he wanted to instill that mindset of the team."

Play from 3:08[3:08]" Yes no question about it and I think it. You know coveted here in this situation that we came in general and I think a natural reaction was secure go to war you know. Maybe rebuild this thing was going to takes but you're going to try to do all those things well. -- I don't I don't have patience for that I know Bill Parcells doesn't Jeff Ireland doesn't so it'll from bar and you know we need we wanted to be an error we wanted to. -- to be able to compete it'll just give ourselves a chance to win games -- maybe where this thing goes. You know and that's really what we've what we've done so I mean not. I mean the ball about standup first that the team at all that this yourself to that we wanted to do. We were fortunate that. We're able want a couple games have been dale which -- went right now also give -- any trophies and meeting Tuesday accomplish which excellence."

Play from 4:02[4:02]" Would be fair to say that you've. Your defensive scheme is unleashing. Joey -- more in the previous three games and it."

Play from 4:11[4:11]" Yeah I would say that that that's Lakers -- You know just -- we came into this league. Really gets a 34 outside linebacker and it'll I mean. We were able to -- courses we could -- is natural position when he was back you know in Pittsburgh. Shall you know this does help them do that it helps use of his talents you know to the best of our ability -- portion of the you know at our -- You know. Not much different whole lot of then you know the Patriots -- some of these street fourteenth if you're outside linebackers can't get that a passer you know really have a chance."

Play from 4:52[4:52]" How much influence guy is Parcells haven't on the day to day basis and what are some of -- that things just from you being around in this that you learned from him."

Play from 5:02[5:02]" Well -- made his influence it'll as far as. You know anything that we do you know from a game plans practice they have -- any of those things you know there really isn't much there at lest I have a question that may go down and it is great which is an Irish you know to be able to have this building. But you know other than that. As far as -- or trouble -- but this is all you know he prepared me. To be in this position without a doubt I think but some of the great that I take control -- I think. Would be game management part of this whole thing you know I -- As a young coach well defined it is still finally they gave me just start much lower. Ultimate for me right now. You know kind of like a quarterback and I think. You know he helped me do that a little bit dish from what he's probably along the way -- management."

Play from 5:53[5:53]" Sample it. Doesn't advantage let time tell anybody but where's this did. Biggest waving you've seen. Parcells in -- On the --"

Play from 6:09[6:09]" Well I mean I think just you know from personal standpoint. That's probably the biggest way you know I mean. One of the things that we don't do here in our players understand issues we continuously -- the bottom of our roster. That's important for -- it ended today. You know whatever we finished our season. We want to make sure that. Which they've dubbed finished maybe with a better 53 that we even start it was so. You know the -- continuation. Turning to the bottom of the roster of those type things -- players culminating. The players go one out from personnel standpoint old he had Jeff Ireland I think that's the biggest immigrant you know."

Play from 6:51[6:51]" Much as Chad Pennington accuracy. What is your offense. What benefit did you get from net."

Play from 7:00[7:00]" I -- that you read this I think it's it'll have to work your football team. Particularly young offense so. You follow the quarterback can -- you change the -- the football little bit Baghdad you know his accuracy. That. You know we're out there in the league right now on first down at first and ten yard -- things. Just giving yourself the opportunity. You don't play throwing -- sub situations to catch a ball wrote that that's imported -- it took all of us. That's always good location and good accuracy. I think you have a little bit of profits off or put -- to change in this league."

Play from 7:42[7:42]" What is the fourth quarter last minute drive like one Pennington engineered last week and when Cassel engineered against the Jets. How much cash paid executive quarterback."

Play from 7:52[7:52]" I don't draw but I really do especially amongst Italy's teammates. But I think that. You know these guys going out there and do what they're doing you know Jack Cassel have in this is not by accident you know that you get into those kind of situations you see these guys they get a ball downfield of the fourth quarter. -- their team given their team a chance to win. It's not by actually that he's got an awful lot of time into it. It'll the most picture drool over and over again but more importantly you know it's they're still study it understand what's going on. You know during those situations I think they're probably separates."

Play from 8:29[8:29]" He's got room for through the Patriots this year. Pollution let you through your confidence and I would appreciate coach you need to see some results it's kind of reassured yourself that. Things usually work about how much of that would do for you."

Play from 8:44[8:44]" Well elevated just look at our age kind of what you try to do have been. What you would do what you start which they volume of appreciation that's a lot of fond of the you -- to go out there originally due due diligence handles all the -- a lot of it. You know but what you did in the real season starts I'll go do it you know that you took over for awarded fifteen. You know all the shutting. You know maybe you gotta you know you look at yourself that your reevaluated yourself constantly look at yourself and ameritrade a my door the right thing -- Much that's port call myself talking to myself an awful lot so. And I needed to you don't see obviously some success as well. So that I knew that that does play an indication that I -- here. You know putting that whole thing you've placed. You know that we were -- all the right things."

Play from 9:36[9:36]" How tough is it to be a team like the Patriots mentally did you know. -- year after year you know everybody's. Got to get --"

Play from 9:45[9:45]" well -- and hope some day we have that problem but. You know I would imagine that that's a tough thing you're not just find it right -- You know maybe it early on it cheated you know I don't know what is it we -- talk a bunch of people -- You know some people might of you know ticket us for well that's not happening now it'll as we go to football games now. You know I think people are you know they understand that. If you do that this team can you know can potentially be -- you know while the Patriots in London. If it all the success that they've had over the years it'll admitted justifiably so quality they -- they've done a tremendous job. You know they're well coached football team they do a tremendous job that way it did it's consistent. You know that I talked to my team. Those things that they have to believe the Patriots still fact that they do what we're we're over again from the consistency of points. I mean that's impressive so you'd know that every week. You're getting somebody's bank shot."

Play from 10:46[10:46]" What attracted you to around the kid from you mess Brandon London how how is he fitting since you brought it."

Play from 10:53[10:53]" Well it's actually failure to look at the world thinks that I thought. Attracted us to branded as the fact that. He had took special teams value. -- had you know he was a pretty tough kid athletic it'll big long did that the receiver position. That. -- did you acrobatic things that way with a ball was sitting here. -- he also had special teams you want to be easier for core special teams player for -- that is an arrow up guy you know that should get better better."

Play from 11:26[11:26]" Much better. If facilities Jake Long now than he was and we --"

Play from 11:32[11:32]" All you have that he's he's an awful lot better I think you know a week's three. Early out of the season take -- strategies learned maybe what people do little while they were gonna attack a beetle. You get out initially to play against good people that you have to play get a little left tackle. You know ten games eleven games hit you you know you'd figure that you're seeing almost everything. So you know I think what is it. He usually doesn't make that same mistake. A kid and you know as he scored through this whole thing these you know each -- each week. You know you would hope that ten weeks into this thing he's you know he's get a little bit better I cheated out of practice feel -- games -- chances -- and almost they draw better now."

Play from 12:20[12:20]" Tony if you don't often wondered who -- question as you have much contact with all the folks back home and yes some sensible. Private community hasn't what you do."

Play from 12:31[12:31]" actually goes sir we and I think this week -- You know for the Oakland game. The university. We had it all glad that down here -- you know that was a bunch of guys showed up here in south Florida. You know was awful -- time. You know a Friday night. Here you know big had a chance to go way that this would troubled -- That was awful bites you know I can't constant contact there with the athletic director had. Of course the new football coach here he rushed Bob Dole out too late for being coached all be so. I stayed contact with the program of excited to footballs back there you know of the university campus and I don't hitter -- and force."

Play from 13:16[13:16]" included him. Appreciated thank you."

Dolphins: Chad Pennington Conference Call

Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington addresses the New England media during his conference call on Wednesday, September 17, 2008. Q: How’s the adjustment to the new offense down there? CP: We’ll it’s exactly that, it’s an adjustment. This will be my sixth week here. I’m learning everyday, trying to acquire more knowledge, gain more insight into our offense, trying to execute it better and do as much as I can to get better at it. It’s been a good adjustment but it’s also been different, so I just keep working through it. Q: Does it help to have stayed in the same division? Seeing a lot of the same teams, like the Patriots? CP: Staying in the AFC East does help with preparation for the opponent. [I have] played all these teams and seen these teams. This will be my ninth year, so I understand how each of the AFC East teams like to play, what they like to do and how they like to attack. My biggest challenge is being able to take that knowledge, apply it to our offense here, learn the details of our offense and try to make our offense work. Q: You’re going a lot to the tight ends so far in two games. Is that just because you like what you see out there or is it a reflection on your knowledge of the offense? Maybe those are easier throws right now? CP: No. It’s just that’s who has been open and where the single coverage has been. I think we have two tight ends that do a great job of getting open and finding areas. The coverage as far as the single one-on-ones, have been with the tight ends, so that’s where the ball has been dictated to go. I try to take each read as its own entity and get the ball to the open guy, not get focused in on one guy. Q: As you’ve assimilated into this offense how much of what you’ve been able to do has been based upon your own natural football instincts taking over in certain instances? CP: That’s always the fine line. Trying to understand the deta...
