The biggest news of the day. Has to be off the field and I know the guys touched on this a little bit earlier in the show there's really not a whole heck of a lot more. To say other than of them do reports. That have come through. Various. Boston media sources of the Boston Herald is reporting this the Boston Globe has reported it pro football talk dot com. All has reported it through the Boston sources espn.com. Which is picked up wondered as well the Patriots quarterback Matt Cassell bothered Greg. Apparently passed away yesterday. -- did leave. The team as they are -- headquartered in San Jose. To be with his family you know beyond that there's just not a -- reported this time so no we can't tell you with a -- he'll play. On Sunday. And we're not even you know couple the sources David -- said that it's his father although most people I think are announcing that it was his father Greg Cassel. On passed away just for those that may be tuning in and on aware of this and you haven't done -- Searching through the Internet today and you're just coming on the first time. He yeah Matt's father and mother have been divorced separated. Since Matt was fourteen years old. In 1996. So. His mother actually had a media duties of vote the data they raising them -- and he's three siblings. Since they split up back in 96. There's no real way of knowing or even I don't know that it's our placed asked. What kind of relationship -- had -- father suffice it to say whether it was good or better even in different is still want to come is quite a shock to play him in his siblings. On in his family. I know that there are several of you that are already aware of this story that probably realize that Brett Favre. Went through something it's him for a few years ago in obviously. Ironic probably was also can -- Oakland Raiders. On in which he you know came back after the news of his father's death. And he had -- an unbelievable -- now. We don't know that's going to be the case for Sunday -- IE. I first of all have to say. That is someone who was recently lost a parent as well. My heart in my my feelings in my thoughts. My prayers. Go to Matt and his family at this time. Usually something like this for those of us. And want to know that I'm speaking to that have lost. Our parents as we get older. Or for those of us that hadn't never known parents but certainly those that have lost them as we get a little bit older. It's it's never an easy thing to get over. I'm not going to tell I'm -- I don't pretend to tell anybody how to act react. To the loss of of apparent because. And your body has handled it somewhat differently. Home. Largely probably depends on the kind of relationship that you had with the parent. But suffice it to say in the majority of cases it's very difficult thing to overcome. I really don't in wouldn't. Blame that. If he felt he needed time agreed. And needed Sunday off. At the same time. Try to put myself when he issues. Honestly you know sometimes the best thing you needed work because it keeps your mind is. And maybe you need other things to concentrate on -- that's what was the case apparently Brett Favre instant a few years ago. He needed to get away from family for a time. Is because it was just it was just it was that this that the sadness was crushing. So let let's just let's give -- some time on this. Suffice to say from a football standpoint and almost seems pointless to war over this but -- but I will. From a football standpoint I'm sure the preparation will be made. In the event that -- does not return for Sunday's game. On and that would mean of course giving getting Kevin O'Connell. Additional reps this week on giving him a chance to -- worked with the first team. As much as possible it just in the event the -- decides he needs to be with a spam and honestly. I can understand. Completely. If he would want to do that and and I'm sure many of you could as well. I would love to hear from me in if you have some thoughts on that you'd like to share. Police in them here web radio -- Patriots dot com. -- if we if you have something you know that you'd like to -- To the net and the team and in the team isn't officially saying anything and I think you could probably understand why in in particular the -- they're not saying anything. It is a private matter it is a personal matter. We only found out about this through. Initially threw. The Boston Herald report. Boston Herald has -- Greek in in San Jose with the team this week covering this is one of the things that we're gonna ask Eric about when he was able to look. Hook up with -- us today and now from San Jose to a get some confirmation on this as well that perhaps is part of the reason why he gets -- blog yet I don't know. I can only I can only surmise. So. That the team does this is a personal matter. And you may not even get a team -- don't be surprised if it. It doesn't happen if if Matt okay is it then maybe the team will say something but you know quite frankly. You know it is a personal matter and so. It's been reported in the media we're sharing that we -- here because I know it's Patriots fans. All of football fans. You would have some concern. And you also wants and kind of confirmation if indeed it is true and based on what we've been able to hear from several. Media sources now but most of them pointing toward the original while Boston Herald and later Boston Globe report. That them. That's all the greatest passed way so. At any rate if you do have some thought he would like this year. You certainly may use this as an outlet. And if and oh win appropriate we will force them to the proper folks. With Patriots football team hopefully to -- The sentiment as well so there you go web radio act Patriots dot com. Pot and then we'll see if we can't afford it on Fred -- the -- old it was what have those who compiled. Two perhaps of print out warts and on to a net and -- the appropriate people okay. So that's the very latest clear the Matt Cassel story is concerned. I realize it is the Oakland Raiders this week it's a little. I have to admit -- the idea of playing a football game when something like this happens within your family and let's face it. That we may not be close family but you know in this particular family that are that is the New England Patriots it's still a difficult thing to deal with and as I said earlier. You know having gone through this myself not to. In the in the recent past anyway. If you'd almost don't know. You almost don't know how to treat the almost don't know how to handle. You don't know if you should go on and in just kind of pick up. Or you don't know if you need to pay the proper respect and spins in doubt it is your -- caught between a rock and a hard place. And I suppose if you've gone through this you know little about what I'm talking about. And if you have gone to some like this. You know your experiences are welcome certainly love to hear from the web radio Patriots dot com. But in the meantime we'll go ahead and -- and pour on board here because you don't this team with -- without man this week is still want to play a football game. On Sunday this team is still in a -- in a struggle for potential playoff spot. There's no question as we spent some time talking about this yesterday. On the program that the Patriots needed to win out they need to win these final three games of the season to have a shot. I think the one thing that we really didn't point out yesterday. That probably deserve to be pointed out right here in now before we go on any further over the tie breaking and what happens here and who -- what happens if such and such does this. The fact of the matter is is that the Patriots and the Dolphins and the Jets the three teams were eight and five right now in the AFC east. These three teams cannot. All three finished tied for the AFC east title it's an impossibility. Well. No it's not a possibility really but it somebody wins out they they can't all three win mountaintop. They get all three -- and potentially in time yes. That's because. Miami in New York play in the final week of the regular season when the Patriots played Buffalo. So if those two teams win their next two somebody's going to finish ten and six. And somebody going to finish eleven and five. In of the Patriots went out than they would be in a two way tie. And I think we as we discussed yesterday to wait ties with the either the Jets or Miami appeared to not be in the Patriots favor. Again I need a little clarification on. A potential two way tie with Miami. Because it would appear with common opponents the Patriots might still have an -- depends on what they consider common opponents so. I just needed little clarification on that on before when -- that's something I know for a fact that we will clear up without. Any doubt at all on tomorrow's program to to give you'll a bit of a -- there. -- Russell Baxter from ESPN are in a Phil -- coordinator who joins each week you're inside the playbook. He'll join us as he normally does on Thursdays and and we'll just ask. Okay we a look at this tiebreaker thing here because this is something that we all have to talk about now. This is something that is important and it looks like he could very well come into play. Provide the Patriots hold up their end of the bargain and win these last three games. So will ask Russell more about that on tomorrow's program. -- we can get some definition to it sounds a little silly because obviously there's a lot of football to be played in the regular season but. Frankly you know that's what we do here we look ahead. And we supply conjecture and we put the -- up there and we think we talk about a lot of what if scenarios and that's part of what we're doing here so. I'll would just be it would it would be better in the Patriots best interest if they are to win out and have both. New York and Miami lose and therefore they would have a game up in the standings in the best either team could do would be ten and six -- the Patriots are eleven and five well obviously therein. Here's the wild thing about it all. Mathematically speaking. At -- was beating the Patriots are still alive if they were to win out there's still alive for bye in the playoffs. They they could they could actually sneak in as a as an eleven and five division champ. I believe. And still get in as -- by the only team that's guaranteed to have a better record right now than the Patriots would would. Obviously beat Tennessee. Pittsburgh. I I'd say that it's unlikely. That they fall. With ten wins but. You know if they did lose three in a row. Com. Baltimore would have to lose. One if not too. And then of course that would be impossible for Pittsburgh lose general because quite frankly they have to play Baltimore. So I guess that one. It will probably be very difficult and even have to be a fluke and it probably one of the scenario that may have myriad possibilities. It's certainly they can finishes at three seed. But that wouldn't give them a -- and the opener -- this to mean -- play in the wild card weekend and I think they'll realize now that seeds two through six. In the AFC this year. Looking ahead here seems to do -- are going to be pretty evenly matched and and you know an even a Tennessee's had an unbelievable season I mean they've had. You know the type of season that certainly I think. In other Patriots felt like they had last year. In a lot of ways. Right -- went undefeated but you know the -- the Titans -- having that kind of season this year and I don't know that anybody really feels like the Titans -- head and shoulders above everybody else. Like maybe the Patriots were felt globe last year of course we all know what happened ultimately you know papers did give me there is just no one super. -- To couple him to a three teams that you can put in the you know above everybody else category but just don't want super team so. Whether it's 2006 or three through six in the AFC. It's pretty evenly matched the only difference would be is being division champ. You get home. So you would get to a chance to play let's say if the Patriots. Finished eleven and five Pittsburgh is on -- win their division. Then that would mean of course the Patriots would finish is no worse. I don't think in the three seed because Denver is -- win to win. The west in the Patriots hold a tiebreaker over Denver with a win. And because of that. That we get to host the succeed. Which right now could be either Indianapolis or Baltimore. So you at least get a chance to host on wild card week. -- let's check in now -- San Jose."
[16:38]" California. And Eric scallop -- from Patriots football weekly Eric how goes the battle tonight. John is doing back there were hanging in today and and in my. I heard yet that is now when -- were over in Seattle last week and that stolen facilitate sorted out it's. As turned it from snow which just a brief flurry in cold weather. Two rainy and windy today I mean it's like there's a monsoon going on."
[17:02]" Really yeah well totally different than what we have on here I'm looking up at cloudless blue skies. Little chilly crowd they're temperatures they're probably. Lower sixties to upper fifties but certainly here -- am certainly in a lot more conducive to playing football than what you have out there."
[17:21]" Absolutely by the way Fred want to meet askew. Where you've been and how communal blogging. -- the garden blog and not only would it Cochran I don't know but just what he's got -- thought everything under control. He is different is just trying to stir the pot at least if you really -- he's trying to tweak you know and try to get -- you know of course it's somewhat you know now. And then and and the Erin I'll know there around yeah he's he's he's on the presence. So. Some some on you probably heard -- mentioned this but some are disturbing news for the job on them yeah canceled out there right."
[18:00]" Yes so we. And none of us here had a chance yet to either see or speak to to Matt about this we're going to try to find out the players -- expected to get here. Any minute now actually saw at. At any point our conversation and down I may have you -- to let you go when that happens but for now. We'll wait and show up and now I'm waiting to get an update on castles. Is just it's his situation for the week we don't know. When he's going to leave it he hasn't already two two particular business -- family how long will be gone. How this will affect the team. In as part of preparations for this weekend we we don't really have any update with that yet because. This development is just happening so quickly and right records that we haven't had a chance -- to talk to anybody who's in the know. Hoping to know more within not within the hour -- so once the players and coaches horizon and have their their scheduled time with the media but. For now that that's kind of the big story of the day as we start in Curtis practiced preparations -- for the Oakland in this weekend. Out here at San Diego State."
[19:10]" But if you do me a favor. Could you do if you find out something of coach Belichick is -- it'll ever before we're done with the program. That you will call back into Dan or -- have a chance to come back opportunities just to give -- and they could you do that."
[19:24]" I'll I'll do my best to do that that the way to -- schedule works out here is. The usually the coach comes out first and enhances -- few minutes with the media. While players are sort of getting getting dressed and ready for practice and and as they come out to practice. We sort of on the kind of like training camp where. At the end of practice to get them in training camp or here it's it's just -- that we get -- at the beginning -- they're going out to practice. So there there's there could be some time when there's lull in between so I -- find something out I'll I'll do my best at the first opportunity it to get it over to parents."
[19:59]" I'm very good now the team actually had yesterday off. I believe in preparation for Oakland is that correct it was it to."
[20:05]" Is it it was a normal Tuesday off just like any other week because you know we flew in. From Seattle on Sunday night. Got in at a pretty reasonable hour. 8:39 o'clock or so let me check and had a -- on to their rooms. Monday it was a normal Monday -- it would be at Gillette. You know watching film of that the previous day's game and having additional meetings and what not and then not -- it was the the normal and -- so they are. And that today has been the normal Monday if you will turn purple ball players. I don't went went this sort of the Monday of the NF so we can and then so here we are ready for to start and not. Just gotta say from the last time we were here that the playing surface. At San Jose State's practice fields which are right behind the Spartan Stadium here are looked to be in much better condition and they were two months ago just kind of odd because it was. Theoretically warmer. We're here two months ago but the field isn't a lot better shape than we actually talked to one of our. Our Gillette Stadium grounds keeper guys who's out here on the trip who was also there -- an October. And even said that by the looks at the it was a much better conditions so that -- the positive -- we're out here before the atmosphere was there. Little Rock it was -- there was some some lumps in places. It it just wasn't what we're used to seeing from an initial field but again -- college field. I think that epic might have learned that you mentioned the last time over here and on the field and in better shape so that that's that's good city."
[21:39]" What's interesting I would assume then that had San Jose not been able to attend this that. My guess would be the Patriots would look elsewhere but then then again I mean we don't really know that."
[21:50]" Well I think. Given that the short timeframe in between one the last trip was and that's one once and advocate might have been more difficult to secure a different location. So I think I think what. I think we would've been back here no matter what but I think in that time -- Between the last and we're here and now they. You know like a -- they may have learned a few things correct it's some some things that needed correcting -- and everything looks -- be. Ready to go and I and I think it's better that they're accurate and anyway it is sort of you already know what you're getting into you know. You're familiar with the routine it's it's it's as close to being familiar as you can get being away from home so I think that also works in the --"
[22:38]" Yeah I would think so I would think so. I'm we certainly have injury situations to deal with in addition to the Matt Cassel story. They would Tedy Bruschi having flown back to Boston. Let me -- this -- you because I got this little nugget from mom my good friend John Clayton of ESPN. And he says that of the Patriots are kind of going through a little bit of a decision making process when it comes to. Trying to decide what to do about Tedy as a flew back to Boston to undergo tests for his knee that he injured. In the win over Seattle. Apparently he does not need to have it surgically repaired. This is -- to a source. Reporting to John. Well but there apparently made a bit of games left in the season to get him back on the field in other words. Time frame might be 46 weeks and until Patriots. Can find some kind of replacement. For Bruschi they really aren't yet ready to put him on the IR can you add anything to that."
[23:36]" That's kind of what we were airing out here as well back it sort of it's one of these things where it's a rock and a hard place. You know the good news is that doesn't sound like it that -- an injury that that uses. They may not be enough time left in the season. To get him back so you you sort of have to. You sort have to make -- a quick decision on whether you wanna. Risk keeping him on the roster and not having anyone else to fill that spot or just letting him -- this season and trying to get some. Wide body and who can make a contribution it's it's it's a tough situation at the end and you know -- said it at this point would that having been a normal Monday and Tuesday which normally the access is very limited. We're just now starting. Define that sort of thing. How and and they say that the buses are just growing up John so I think the players and coaches about Rodman hopefully I can get some more information for you. But I map let you go in and trying to work on that and its first opportunity I get I'll call you got back and and much you know I don't know."
[24:41]" They're going to play and Eric thanks. OK and probable. -- Filipino Patriots football weekly. Sporting live up from -- state the Patriots are headquartered in with the players in the coach is pulling double him do his job. Four Patriots football weekly and here on the website and then if he's able to find out as a city any definitive information on either of the Matt Cassel story. And the situation there or if with the on in her problem with Tedy Bruschi and then them. He -- it was supposed accurately in the program and he will check in and we will bring it to you first right eager. Inside the playbook so Simone breaking news perhaps talk about -- let's go ahead and let's take a timeout here. And then around would that my wagon and from mom. So from like illustrated is coming up here about ten to fifteen minutes your emails. Web radio at Patriots dot com that's the address -- we have some thoughts on the yeah. Tragedies -- Matt Cassel -- some thoughts on Tedy Bruschi and what you think the Patriots might do. With his roster spot if they can't find another linebacker. Then I would certainly welcomed the suggestion maybe there's into the name out -- that we haven't thought of and what we come back from the break. What -- going to do -- I'm going to give you a name that maybe you haven't yet considered maybe you as. Not only as a replacement for Bruschi. Ball the if you still think the Patriots need a little help in the defensive backfield. I've got a name for him and I'd be curious as to your reaction if the Patriots decide to make a play for this gentleman. So what do all that come up right here and said the playbook."

[29:26]" Back side a little -- Wednesday I'm John -- Web radio at Patriots dot com. And finally 54 37482. Is the telephone number black flag -- for months silver and black illustrated will join us here. In about ten minutes so stay tuned for that definitely would a conference call coming up in our number two of the program -- bring it to Damon. All the of the stuff that's going on right now mentioned some some names for you here at least initially. You'd probably have read some of the media reports. In the absence of -- We're since the injury to Tedy Bruschi. In the win over Seattle on Sunday. Matt Chatham names come up because I know that he hasn't he's currently on -- roster and -- based on what I have been able to find. I know I saw his name mentioned and a couple of different media reports this morning as well because he certainly you know knows the system. But again -- at the same situation when Junior Seau and Rosevelt Colvin when they were brought into the fold last week. On -- question of -- you know not only locating but you know is that you know party ready willing and able you know to fulfill that particular role. Soul you know that I would assume again. Depending upon what they ultimately decide to do with Tedy Bruschi. Is. Part of the overall process of of trying to do what to do with the roster spot it may very will be that. They decide to go with what they have may be Larry Izzo get some time. In terms of you know his ability to play on the inside who knows. How that will particularly of play out but I'm sure that'll be amongst the items that the Patriots are red discovered apparently. Again according to a couple of different sources is apparently -- window Bruschi knocked. His knee with the Mike Richardson on Sunday. He has a medial collateral. Ligament problem and it doesn't say whether it's it's fair or bruised or strain. It is something with a medial collateral. That needs a little time to heal. Andy if that is the case. That it does not look like he would be able to return for the remainder of the regular season. Apparently the the conjecture is he your based -- in the years of the two sources that I'm reading from. Today on this particular story. Then it's a 46 week type of situation. For him to -- that he'd need to be away from football for that long so it's conceivable. Conceivable anyway that he could return. In the playoffs or during the playoffs. And perhaps that is part of what is trying to be decided upon this week. After everything that he is gone through with his physician in Boston. On in the determination is made okay is their chance to get him back this year and if there is a chance to get him back this year. Now what do we do with the roster spot and if we're going to IR and that will fill the roster spot so anyway that's that's what they're going to right now in terms of Tedy Bruschi. But suffice to say he isn't playing this week against Oakland. That isn't going to happen. After coming back this way since leaving the team after Seattle. And it looks certainly for all practical purposes. Analysts -- told otherwise it would appear the states that Tedy is done for the regular season but will just will have to wait and see. You know how works out here. Com we don't really know like guesses how long we can. Hold on the roster spot especially because you know we know that they are very thin at linebacker right. So I guess in that regard. In order to be able to make up for that roster spot they might go ahead and I aren't here fairly -- who knows. I'd be shocked if we didn't here's something within the next couple of days. In terms of what Tedy Bruschi at least immediate future for the season will own tail here with. The thing I was going to bring up here is the fact that them. There was a veteran cornerback. In the NFL. Released today. And you know it's not exactly a name a household name. Bloodied certainly I think. Gives you a little a little sense of what's out there and is there's some help. And you know consider and that you know even a guy like Ellis Hobbs hasn't been completely healthy. Here's a guy who could step -- give you I would think quality minutes depending upon you know what is of you know what you -- his abilities to be in the first place. It's Brian Kelly. Cornerback for the Detroit Lions who was released. I'm. Released. By the Lions. He did not play at all in their loss to Minnesota on Sunday. You'd fallen down on the depth chart alliance which sounds almost incredible to believe when a team is oh and fourteen in. You have a veteran player. You know -- is 32 years old. He'd spent ten years with Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He became a free agent signed a three year deal with the Lions just this past march. And the reason the eternal lines because. He was of being reunited in -- with the -- former coach Rod Marinelli it was a defensive line coach. For the bucks. From the mid ninety's to what was -- 2005 is the story and so. At any -- Kelly had started in eleven games this year for the Lions 26 tackles no picks. Lions by the way signed -- Dexter Wynn. To replace Kelly on the active roster. So Brian Kelly is available. Now consider what the Patriots did earlier this year by. Going out and obtaining you know guy like Deltha O'Neal. All the scrap heap after he was released by Cincinnati. How do you feel about Brian Kelly. This should be a move that you would advocate in particular. Is there somebody else out there that you feel like you know. Based on the research that -- daughter what you rhetoric you've spoken to might be around means to me. I don't know that you can fill the linebacker spot year old already -- in the secondary. You know the secondary to meet. Is he -- medium to me I think this is worth the shot. Mean one not. You need bodies you -- capable bodies these guys played you know ten now eleven years in the NFL. I realize he played for really bad Detroit team but apparently some of that is not necessarily his fault. I'd be curious to know you feel about it so Brian Kelly for the Detroit Lions is available. Tandem. We'll see if maybe the Patriots decide to somehow. Make a move one way or the other gets its in its possible the State's zone. It and that was the that was the roster move that I'd seen today that I wanted to share with you since the Patriots might still will be in the market for. Extra help on the defensive backfield for -- listened on this season. That I don't know if you saw this story at as well but I think it's worked bring in appear. Because we did talk yesterday and I asked some of you your thoughts on how you were. Have. How your consumption habits in terms of the Patriots in terms of the NFL. In terms of -- sports in general might be changed because of the economic downturn. Didn't get a lot of response to that particular question although we did get a few responses. And and I think the at least from the few response that we got was that it's not changing your habits much at all he at least not yet. Now I can be speaking I realize to an entirely different audience today. Perhaps. You were habits have already been curbed. Somewhat because of the economic downturn in the if that is the case. I'd still welcome but still like for you to look let me know in what way. Your habits have been curtailed. Web radio at Patriots dot com and -- you live overseas maybe you're listening to -- from the UK today or somewhere else and in your one of our European outpost that hasn't affected you. That's fine. I'd like to know. If it has or hasn't. And where you're located in whether you even proceed. If things continued to get a little. -- up there if you could foresee having to cut back on some of the things that you. That you like to do in terms -- following year. Your favorite teams and in football particular. This story came out there and I actually -- is a little bit shocking. It's all of a shock. The arena football. Apparently is expected -- to cancel. This next season. It would be its 23 season. In 2009. Are several media reports are going with this story today. The Rocky mountain news in Denver reported today that league officials are expected to make the announcement before the end of this week. On the Kansas City star is also reporting. That the communications director for their team the kids in grade brigade. As players union in the AFL agreed late last night. To suspend. Operations. The quote from mom. Pete likens who has the communications director for the Belgrade. Well in the star says. It's pretty much a done deal to suspend 2009 season and work toward a single entity league we plan to start up again in 2010. Now the league has been looking over the last couple years not try to find some ways to improve. -- its finances. -- for what it's worth officially are saying. That they are not yet ready to announce a long term plan. They have delayed the release of their 2009 schedule. They put off their dispersal draft -- because they've had a couple of teams New Orleans most definitely which has them. Ceased operations. And they put off the start of free agency as well so -- story that Bears watching. Because as the economic downturn in this country continues. To affect all of us it is now beginning to reach on into the rubble professional sports. If indeed the AFL. Is going to suspend operations for 2009. All right so a couple of news items to share with you today now let's turn our attention back to the fact of the matter and then the Patriots getting ready to tackle -- Oakland Raiders on Sunday in Oakland Mike."
[40:10]" Wagon and covers the Raiders senior writer for silver and black illustrated he joined us here inside the -- Mike it's great to speak with -- thanks for some time today. I. Doing great thank you I assume you've probably heard the stories that were trying to follow list a little bit here. Well concerning Matt Cassel and the fact that he is out there with the team and their reports of there than his father's passed away so. You know it sounds almost crazy talk about it from football sense because he certainly deserve to have time with -- family. I know that Oakland has also head. Some questions as to whether or not a JaMarcus Russell might even be healthy enough to suit up and play this Sunday from the Oakland standpoint. How do you guys look at this particular bit of news today."
[40:55]" Well in the you know it is is tragic story and and won the -- and condolences to both immediately after the council family you know. But from the from the Raiders standpoint you know from a football side he might say it's seems almost kind of cold. Even discussed it but you know. The fact that it happened. I guess earlier in the week you know maybe Matt is able to get back with his family and still return time of the game for the Patriots you hope he's able to wood and in the past I remember Brett Favre coming into Oakland -- that Monday night game so I think after his father passed away having you know arguably one of the greatest games of his career. And so you know you'd ever. You never right and they are. Or or anything in these situations you know because you just never know are -- going to react. Both from the Raiders standpoint you know I think. It really doesn't matter who the quarterback is going to be -- just had so many problems are on both sides of the ball but it really doesn't matter who lines up opposite them right now you know coming off that loss -- it is San Diego last Thursday in which -- literally completely manhandled and and you know afterwards in the -- You heard cup -- somewhat questioning whether guys are taking it seriously and in the back. All you -- just loud laughter. You know after the team these guys really embarrassed on Monday night -- Thursday night football national television. So -- the Raiders have Archimedes used. To -- to be affected in you know. If the Patriots are forced to play without counsel you know that the Raiders may try to -- them more. Try to shake up whoever is back there but again you know I really don't think it from the Raiders standpoint they agent they can afford to be too concerned with. With what's happening on the other side of the ball they have too many issues. For themselves particular."
[42:45]" Might have so some of the guys in this -- team would you think of a packed it in for this year."
[42:50]" Oh yeah yeah I'd like definitely think you use you saw that Thursday -- number -- before you know here and there. I hate it that it packed it in but I think it. Became a bigger issue last week in San Diego now he talked about as close out with the Patriots with the with the Texans -- and then Tampa Bay you know all three teams or are pregnant -- for the playoff chase it. All three of those teams have everything to gain and nothing to lose in the Raiders are you know already focusing on next year they're probably going to have a new head coach and you know they're going to have to go to -- another big round of free agency try to tackle some of these -- gaping -- that they have so yeah I think it definitely sensed that you know at least with some -- that -- and and so -- you know what this season's over a -- collect a paycheck in get out -- about next year."
[43:43]" While you know I I think that that's who we've all probably seen teams. Heard about teams even cover teams at some point in time and our careers. Where you wonder whether or not some guys. On a team of kind of packed it in because things have always gone a little puts -- what have you. Uh oh put a percentage on the number of players on this team."
[44:05]" You feel -- you know absolutely. I would I would. Really keep it to a minor cancel it and you know the one thing about this Raiders team that I will say that you look at. All the distractions they've had to deal with you know beginning last march when Lane Kiffin reportedly. Later the Al Davis asking him to resign you know it on through all the hold rob that soap opera did. You know the changing of the offensive you know who's calling the plays on offense and you know releasing get on -- site shows going on this team and remarkably and it will give the players. The top of credits. For the most part they've done a really good job is totally themselves from now you know I think that day with eighteen you have you know it especially keep it. It was appropriate -- three yeah 39 record you know you're gonna get guys that are that are looking you know packing -- With the Raiders are obviously it's a small. Minority of very very small minority. You know I still look at guys like Justin Fargas the running back -- look you know his nickname since -- crash test dummy just could -- throws his body up again if you expect Eric. If you watch a guy like now be possible on that tied it -- they've these guys are still court hard and you know like give them a lot of credit because dispute so much going on it would be really easy for this entire team to to just like say -- and that could happen along time ago."
[45:33]" I would imagine that that you brought up nominee's name a couple of times. And first of all congratulations for you know coming through the pronunciation like that you probably been used to that by now."
[45:44]" If it is it took a -- or they'll remember. But never forget the day was drafted. Actually -- to -- him. You know we got -- adequate schooling on it it took a couple times you know from not being it was very very patient. And you know he was really good about it's said that. That was probably the one thing that bothered him most in college but it's switching from safety to cornerback -- if you would you know having to explain it. -- of the names of people that you know he's truly one of the class guy in the league and you know almost doesn't fit in with the raider image you know so many ways and but the guy who's going to be very -- one way or another and -- free agent."
[46:25]" I was in -- yeah. That's where I was going with this because obviously you know the Patriots have a definitive need in the defensive backfield and -- I wonder how much -- how much of everything go -- try to -- keep him around."
[46:38]" Well I think you know it's not a question of both. Whether Oakland wants to keep him around -- depth in the want to keep him around a -- at a or long term deal on the table for him last year but he turned it down because he was worried about the direction the franchise was taking he was concerned that he wanted to see. You know which direction they were going to go what move the team would make before he signed his name and -- committed to two -- future here at Oakland. And so different you know he signed his franchise tender. And again I think that you know will continue to try to work got a long term deal I can't imagine that what has gone on this year. And talking and not -- in knowing -- as well that got annoyed over the years. I can't imagine it is opinion on this team changed very much and I doubt it. He signed his name to a long term deal of but I do see him playing again in Oakland next year they'll disrupt the franchise tag on him. At least one more year. Then he'll probably get free agency. In 2000 -- So he of the franchise tag put on him this year is that right yeah yeah okay and he's a woman went into that. Right and it's very similar to a Raiders did a couple of years ago with Charles -- franchise that one year -- ten million does a great slow because. He wanted to be the top -- quarterback in the league and at the time it was Champ Bailey who got -- eighteen million dollars signing bonus to the Raiders to know that it ought to give Charles what's in the long term deal but instead they act for two years eight of 21 million dollars for two years. When they could sector okay here's -- nineteen million dollar signing bonus. And you know will will keep the veteran's minimum back well progresses -- which is common practice kicker Adam. Because the paddock for the same money that -- paid for two years that could have had it locked up too long term deal and him you know it's it's similar situation out here. Which it would not be so I think it's less about money with him and more about wanting to play for winning franchise you know place for a winning team succeed since he was drafted by into the NFL."
[48:33]" Yeah that's true no let me ask you something where this is concerned because frankly I find it kind of intriguing we know that. You know Randy Moss gets a chance to come back this week you play in Oakland for the first time since Oakland dealt him this way but then again earlier this year as a part of that whole. You know Al Davis thing that came out he let it out of the bag that he thought the Patriots have done some tampering which of course. The NFL later said well we don't find anything to them that maybe just mr. Davis being mr. Davis."
[48:59]" He's mister Davis yeah I mean that was that was part of that whole ambling. Press conference he held them to announce -- part of it. That run it out of nowhere and city just struggled with the charge that there is that the Patriots tampered with mark in. Requested out of boxers what are we hearing about this you know that your after the the Patriots could indeed tampered. And -- was being out papers he would have immediately contacted the ball that would have been you know major uproar over that fact of the matter was. According -- cupid who I tend to believe more often then I would open rated this skewed. Fuel light. -- not just simply did not want to play Oakland anymore he says it was no offense to the new coaching staff coming -- at the time which was -- in the deck he'd just do it. Want to play in Oakland anymore and that fit in line with things that he was saying during his final here you know here Oakland when he said it would like walking on eggshells and it is just was just a not a healthy situation. You know I'm not surprised that he's rebounded the way he has in New England. Superior. Superior athlete and you know channel it's taking you know took some time pretty capsule look at on the same page -- you know that would be expected him. You know I mean I. If there's a receiver. That I want my -- Much is it it -- it knowing some things I've learned out here about bonds interpret it problem Mike sided it's mark and and you know the guys are great great athlete and -- it it should be a great matchup depending on how. The Raiders won a tactic whether they're going to shadow on the on him or they're just going to go and play the straight and demand. And let him match up with you know whichever side of the field you know."
[50:44]" Let me ask you something here might just because of this I guess perceived -- by Al Davis notion that the Patriots might have -- when it comes to Moss. You'd think that would make him less likely to deal with the win the for potential trade it. For non."
[51:04]" Well I think it's. -- great indication of how now feels about. The New England Patriots. Goes back to and LaMont Jordan signed with the team according to you. Certain sources. What are the stipulations with the Raiders decided to that. Lamar out of his contract -- that he would not sign which specifically the New England Patriots that he would outdated Matt. Two other adult should know -- But as far as dealing copy. The -- after at least 21 round draft picks for him and -- actually may be one of the few players in the league that's really work. That and possibly more. In 2002 and approach it that it that the market."
[52:22]" The market that way -- well that certainly sounds like a plausible scenario. I was to Marcus Russell is there a chance that he might play this and then you think."
[52:31]" you know talking to him Monday at all indications were that it was a you know a -- A mild to moderate. Ankle strain on his right -- that he intends to play. Similar to an injury that he had earlier in the year that put him in a walking -- You know he wasn't walking boot after this game but you know obviously. Sort of keep the mound in the second now. And so we'll find out to date practice and did over to about thirty local time on here so lined out to just how much practice. He was able to get and the other thing is that they're backup Andrew Walters and exactly -- either. So they're very very limited in the end you know when you have an offensive line that hasn't protected the quarterback. -- as well as they need to. You know that's going to be in major issues you know the mobility of both those guys if there. You know what they have they're playing double could be playing with you know pop wheels. So to speak so the -- yeah the Patriots attack mostly to just political the Raiders heavily in and you know and had great success with it it's. Don't see any reason why the Patriots would want to get out of that same game plan."
[53:41]" Is Marcus tuiasosopo is still the third --"
[53:44]" Yeah eight years in -- got into -- game earlier this year again when Marcus didn't start. Because of of that earlier prior ankle injury. And had to altered it got injured late the first out in the -- the -- it had a lot of success in you know in them while -- was able to finish up again bit. You know it is desperately again kind of like what I was -- the -- it doesn't matter who they're playing. Really for the Raiders right now it in and it's been Yankees for a couple of years now it doesn't matter who their quarterback is because they just don't have the means of protecting guys. You know and I thought they couple -- don't -- Kerry -- got here rapid in the good success he's having with the Titans now and and kind of vindicates him a little bit good for him. Out of that the Raiders -- the line has -- just in. Really really that particular that it goes quite Paris on the left side court program right right no but they've been unable to stop. And that's enabled him to just load up and go heavy after -- markets which is really hurt I think is development you know dispersal year's starter. I was Jake Grove in the center. Jake is hoping to play this weakness the last couple games. With a calf injury. And unfortunately like he said it would have been mean which he had Michael fractures during on in the offseason so. You know take. Fairly well I think that line they know that they could've played better against the run they were much better run unit last year and they brought back four of the five guys for the five starters from last year's team so they haven't had great success from the ground that they had. -- a year ago so I think that's from Matt collected standpoint they although they could've played better but I think Jake has given them. Much better played he has the past but that being said he sees the Raiders will at least you know look at the create -- market if there's not a better instantly can come -- big inside. In bringing in to maybe push at least sign John way to Tampa Bay's starter. The last couple years but you know. He really it was a babe it is to do with the Raiders hoped he would do and has spent most of these backing take up until electric just recently -- Grow out but -- all indications that they will be back in the starting lineup this week."
[56:00]" Actually lead did not play last week in San Diego is that correct. Yeah any problems. That -- on what his status is. But Nellie and -- Much they -- we last talked to cable cable in -- a coaching you said that he expects will lead to play this week and it was it was not. Major resist according to the Raiders just does that take issue it's. He was unable to shake which you know having -- migraines in the past and they didn't say whether this is Mike -- not the postings could be really debilitating. So the planet hopefully that you park in the starting -- opening medium I mean you know he's been well. You know none of the receivers they have been very productive -- thinking what did you know -- they could have a chance they could have this -- this year. We're not that wide receivers has more than twenty catches on the year which is just a base to -- it. You know he's been one of the few steady is that -- so they definitely need him and it's completely -- into this game."
[57:01]" You mentioned obviously Justin Fargas a little bit earlier and what his values and this team how is Darren McFadden fit in with this team has he been a successes. Maybe you guys thought --"
[57:12]" Although I think. He's been far below what their but it is expected to be in the only reason that the I think it's the fact that he's been slowed by turf toe injuries first on the right would rather early part of the year and in. Just sitting getting that play on the left with that forced him to miss three games in. I don't think the coincidence that the Raiders opposite just. Is clicking as well he's not a ball he is the spark the straw masters history and it's just steeler linebacker seventies. Yankees. But. You know -- Raiders just have not done I think you know eight when he was hurt you know that that. The could be each other up it's up we -- it and they just happening utilized -- in the way that you're expected to talk about acute. Who came out of colleges you know -- school All-Star. Throw catch -- a lot. Every. Great as having used -- that way when they -- wildcat formation. That he brand you know it in Arkansas and Arkansas in the one -- league wide everybody uses they haven't had rolled up. An option happened and do much of anything other hand up artistry of the middle or take it and culture of the middle. You know you would think with the problems are having at wide receiver they would split him out more eat it -- college he's got some of the best economic team -- they've been very limited. Into you know as to how they used him in repeatedly we've got cable about that you don't think -- cut this guy who has now that he is healthy and he keeps insisting that they -- are but I look cute you know two weeks ago against Kansas City it's one touch in the second half and in the Indian against and -- he really wasn't a factor at all in in you know for the most part I was. But he that's the he had one area -- and two catches against San Diego so you talked to them. In the last six quarters border -- overall pick in the draft -- and still is arguably only. Legitimate. Beat playmakers they have on offense. And it's just it boggles the mind you know like so it makes even more perplexing -- cables sit there and is that they're doing a better job of getting the ball."
[59:21]" Bolivia also -- the -- and decide real quick and other than -- as anybody else stood out with any positive. I shall we stadium. Residual."
[59:31]" Affect -- it yet again you know I think. Kirk Morrison in the middle linebacker is. Quietly put together you know very solid season. He'd like everybody has had trouble against the run that. I believe he's -- among the top six or seven players and tackles. He's constantly around the ball it. And -- you know the leader of this -- it's it's you really came into the league as a rookie. Even played alongside guys like Warren Sapp and Derrick Burgess and and I -- Quietly put together very qualities and I don't think it's much recognition because look at all the problems having against the run this year and end the big lapses at -- I think without take away from some of the credit maybe he should deserve and the other guys that stepped -- And given them some you know better than expected minutes is in Kalimba Edwards thirty -- event. Who leads in the fact and it really stepped up well Burgess was down provided them with what actress we've been able to generate this year."
[1:00:32]" I it would seem to me that. Maybe the best part of this Oakland team certainly from a consistency point of view would be in the kicking game. Is that is that correct assessment yeah thanks."
[1:00:42]" definitely I mean both kickers. Do you know post Shane Lechler potter beat the AFC in -- and also leads the he would kick landed inside the twenty really has developed into. You know the probably the kicker in -- in the game today when you look at everything in. And that the number of times she's had a you know come in and they'll outlets -- in the you know there on the other certain point there's Sebastian Janikowski who. You know has got more or notoriety that some of the more. Ridiculous situations that the Raiders have put him in you know kicking in the 76 yard field goal before halftime against the Chargers you know in the first meeting between -- change and it. Trying to run at -- or ten against the cheese when you pitched the ball you know between -- the holders lakes. And -- seven yards behind on commission trying to get a 260 pound kicker. Outlawed these events in theory seventeen yards in just mind boggling -- you take away those great. Check -- he's been very very solid. And would probably be having his best year if they did put him in this -- those like just. It's shaking mine Barton one pretty it's situation that it has put it."
[1:01:58]" Has he hit a 76 yarder practice."
[1:02:01]" No he'd. Where that came from my -- you -- Last year I believe it was against Kansas City in -- kicking game winner. And he kicked a 64 -- I typically be kicked a 64 yard attempt. That hit two thirds of the way up the goal of political post that you operate. Hit it was the upright and -- the -- you know no good but man on the other foot we you know one way or the other. That the good 6970. Yards and he definitely has the power but everything you know in talking to a everything has to go right even settlements 76 yarder. Bet even if you keep it is well he kicked at sixty or yarder. Attempt last year that that he didn't think he would have made it. Woods shot -- one on the I don't know I think. I think that was more of -- More -- Lane Kiffin parting shot Davis you know bailed way you know -- they blame it camp repeatedly complained about. The roster and some of the talent the team and -- you know assembled and took veiled shots at them -- and this was kind of like yeah okay -- going to be a -- probably and so here I'll take this series 76. Here's your first round kicker that kicker so secure kicked in. That's what I really think that was more and they and anything else but it."
[1:03:25]" Tell all of us I think around here really in all honestly Michael even imagine it how in your estimation has Tom cable. Handled this. Season such as it has been."
[1:03:36]" You know he's been put -- of the real policy situation problem taking over what -- the guys. You know immediately took it personally. Tom cable. And two -- stepped in and replace that guy. -- immediately put on the -- in an uncomfortable situation and I think that he tried to do the best. You know recruited in this. Situation -- the players. You know for the most part -- support you know haven't heard anything negative about him. But again I think he hurt himself when he when he makes decisions. Like you know confidently. Still -- for ten and it knocked. -- giving Darren McFadden the ball not making sure that this guy is offered in the -- took over play calling. Form there -- coordinator Greg -- to three weeks after -- streak took over. For -- and offenses and it's just simply regressed under cable's so. From that standpoint I think you know. That he is not prepared well at the -- caller I think its head coach he's probably done a little bit better now and the players. But the real big issue I think for Oakland on the overall standpoint news. If Al Davis decides to him to go inside and coach Nazis in. And doesn't expand cable's contract doesn't extend the permanent job to camp. Then. Oakland is going to lose a very good offensive line coach because -- can't -- Tom cable taking the demotion in going back to tackle position you know as offensive line coach where he really I like -- said ex Celtic took a ragtag team. Players like built them into one of the better run blocking units. In the league game and you know although they have question marks with a pass protection I think that was more the talent level and not so much coaching -- so so really I consider it if the Raiders in the -- policies and they're also going to in the hospital line coach and they'll be hard. Pressed to find one that was as good at least with the run -- cable has been."
[1:05:38]" I know that former Patriots linebacker coach rob Ryan said -- and defensively as well for. For this team and just because of some of the problems that have been back there I wonder if anybody looks at him favorably from an Oakland point of view."
[1:05:50]" I don't still holds a lot of support in the locker room and that's you know important but more importantly he -- all the support. Needs -- Al Davis who loves this guy in although he. Won't hire him to be a coach you know and Robinson tribute that position numerous times now in and out turned him down. It's it's clear that that he does have a the label -- papers side because you know playing Kiffin wanted to -- at the end of last year and essentially had done that before. Davis found out stepped in Eden said no you're not going to do that and keeping -- defensive coordinator it's still rough winds exceeded you know three. Well with cable is not important coaches. As four different head coaches as the Raiders -- as a coordinator. What. It's coordinator last for a coaching change not hit the ball. You know certainly not some of the top the equipment and great. You have to coordinators would would be able to sustain four. You know head coaching changes and so I think it speaks volumes about how what's the Raiders -- Al Davis. Value."
[1:06:59]" Right you know Mike -- sure appreciate the time today the final question I would have for you is. Under what scenario what set of circumstances. Would have to exist. In your estimation. For Oakland to win this game on Sunday."
[1:07:16]" What's going to take you know. The would have looked better games. That they played this year obviously that's that's kind of dumb statement may -- but you know we saw them. Right up and beat the Jets in overtime but really I've got to that point right there that they turned the corner you know they didn't just win the game from start in his. They had -- a way to gut it out egyptians themselves in the foot the fourth quarter kept fighting kept fighting. Found a way to beat the Jets in overtime. And I thought that that was a big step for -- but the middle -- the following week -- you know and everything that they are all you know two steps forward priest expects that the -- paid to make or maybe Denver. Think okay where is that they've known here -- since then they've lost can nutrient losses San Diego so it's it's a big you know with the ability is there which scene it. But it just a matter of putting it together I think they're going to have to come out they're going to have to get Darren McFadden involved. That's the only way honestly that this profits as a chance to to start doing something resolved it can't score touchdowns -- can barely it is. Range field goal of the points. So you have to get it -- the ball and repeatedly gave him the ball if they can do that announced that will be able to open up. Some of the passing game a little bit hopefully for JaMarcus Russell the other side -- they can't allow the Patriots. Two get their running game going back -- sit back and forced the game on to the quarterback whether it's counsel. -- or or whoever it is after the game one at quarterbacks just because they allow. -- coming in just walk up -- the -- the -- as they have. You know positive out some teams do this year it is just going to be a long day in and again that you. It doesn't matter who the quarterback is because since Japan and the ball awful base so it really comes down to them for. Giving herald -- started and making sure that the Patriots can't get their running game going."
[1:09:07]" Mike wagon and again who's the senior writer for a black and silver black illustrated -- On here with -- the play -- Mike thank you so much for sharing some insight on the on the team and it's greatly appreciated you're spending time with us and he. Bring around a little knowledge about the Raiders as -- admit. You know. Just not only because of the distance between new England and Oakland it's been a little bit about the difficult way to get some handle on this team but quite frankly -- the way that the season has gone on. And of course we get embroiled literal sense of I guess. Juan soap operas and a lot of different ways personal with a lot of injuries around here. It's just it's been difficult for us almost to focus on upon from -- so sure appreciate the time -- today."
[1:09:50]" Absolutely no problem anytime in the -- to this game Sunday. You know I'd love good football and -- local book will open its involvement here. Should be exciting."
[1:10:03]" What really good stuff might appreciate the time thanks again Arctic. It's again Mike -- from a silver black illustrated. With -- into the play that's -- very. Forthright comments that he had to make. And I appreciate his honesty about the team. -- about the whole Al Davis debacle from. Formerly of the year. You know it's very forthright comments I thought is well. On some of the personnel. The challenges. On the face Oakland. And certainly some honesty when it came to you know what they had to do to try to actually win a football game keep -- here's the one thing that really worries me the most. About this Sunday. This is an Oakland team that did beat the Jets albeit it was hard but that they beat the Jets they beat the Jets. And if the Patriots are four. To go with Kevin O'Connell a quarterback. He'd just think all -- have to be off on you know what your expectations. Might be for this game. And so I think will end up haven't you know bites and nails and sit on the edge of our seats. And hopefully you know just graded out to another win much like I -- the team had to do this last week against Seattle. I think most everybody expected the Seattle game would be tied to Seattle is not. You know your your typical two intensity and everybody realized that team still does have some talent on yet. Com and it has been you know hit by some injuries and some of the problems as well. I don't know that we really know what the talent level might be in the Oakland team which is why we were. Try to be as thorough as is Mike had time in terms of some of the personnel for Oakland here's -- because we don't know. And he mentioned right up the top of our conversation. He thinks that there's a percentage of guys on the team maybe a small but there are certain guys on the team that have already given up. They mailed there and they're done there's three weeks last left the season and they're just collecting a paycheck. You really don't. Fine that's prevalent. Even some of the bad teams and certainly no one who's willing to admit that that the case. And yet we might have that your. So it it does add some intrigue to the matchup on Sunday I think it does. Leaves some doubt in my mind as in maybe even some of viewers. On as to whether or not the Patriots should win this and a walk over I'm sure there -- many of you that will say they should win anyway no problem. And I get that I understand that that would be my initial inclination but I think number one yes. They beat the Jets so that certainly physically capable if they're able you know do some of the things that. Perhaps that they've done. In the past that's number one and number two if the Patriots are going to be without Matt Cassel and any time. Now I'm taking advantage means that is Eric Beck --"
[1:13:00]" Yeah yes yes -- How's it going. Good good I just had a minute here in between. But Ellis Hobbs -- like I guess about about the situation on. I actually -- that he had a chance talked to -- Since the news and now and he said he hadn't but that was because. Ellis -- you don't in his situation it it. It it would happen and he's the kind of guy you want to be alone for awhile and the deal that sort of collective thought about it. So he kind of went something like that happens it sorted. Treats other people that way you what you and their space in which event he sort of come back. But. He Ellis also said that. When Matt does come back whenever that may be -- he doesn't want it. Sort of dwell on the on the situation or or dwell on the topic -- ask about it wants and try to that he wants to try to make things that's comfortable -- as normal as possible. Basically I -- saying you know want to get back here. Try to get him back into the football group and try to get his mind off things as opposed. Talking about it and and dredging up more -- you know might be dealing with so that's just. Kind of an interest in uh oh -- deal with -- I think. That's at that that's kind of where Ellis wants to do it in. That's what you planned on doing it so but he definitely you know expresses. Sadness because -- said you know I still have -- my parents and very -- to have that so I don't really know exactly what he's gone through but. Certainly Childress certainty that."
[1:16:30]" Absolutely aren't that so that's good stuff Eric thanks for checking back him and what what does it would have checked in with the before the end of the show will talk to tomorrow. No problems. You -- caliber you know."

[1:21:25]" Rolling along here inside the playbook for a Wednesday John -- with -- here web radio. Patriots dot com or email address by only 5437482. Is our telephone number of course the news of the day. That's do with Matt hit the story coming up the Matt Cassel father Craig. And passed away as we've been told today actually happened on Monday night late. In August that was made aware of yesterday left the team to go to his family yesterday as well late yesterday and coach Belichick just addressing the situation. In San Jose with a team had quoted -- we just -- short while ago in the fact is that there's really nothing else. New report in terms of his availability for this week's game against Oakland. This is something that will be on. Determined over the coming hours and the next couple days. In the meantime from a football sense again that it it sounds. Kind of crash Stephen talk about it but from football since the best guess here is that certainly the Patriots of Kevin O'Connell. All the reps that he needs in case Matt decides to stay with his family and grief. Which I think all of -- could certainly understand. On those of us who have lost parents the past. Yeah handled grief in many different ways. There is no right way in their is no wrong way to handle. They're just isn't. Different people respond to different things. And however Matt needs to handle this how Matt needs and this is a life story it's not just about one game one weaker you know one occurrence here it's a life stories forever now so. Where he needs to handle it is how he needs to handle them that means he misses on Sunday. On the Patriots will do the best they can to pick up the pieces without him and move onward because they do have a game that they need to plate. On and they do have you know post season they didn't need to -- to -- that would keep fresh in everybody's minds as well so. That would certainly prevents them present some opportunity you know everybody would feel like you know picking it up a little bit maybe even you know winning one for him and his father. Because the situation if it turns out like that. Again over the next few hours and in the next day or so. On your Patriots dot com and a Patriots dot com radio a will bring in the latest as we can get it from on Patriots headquarters and Wednesday. On this email. Come from Jim and forties is John first condolences to man and family in the passing of his dad of course -- of -- knows how this will affect him. He'll have to decide that for himself lost my mom last January's white in empathize. My guess though is he will be back in time to practice in to play. On Sunday and I think -- world good to get back at football. The fact his parents are divorced. Matt has two Brothers or baseball players and a sister to group them this with Hampshire that preacher encourage him to rejoin the team for Sunday's game. Specially with the team and essentially a win out to have a realistic chance to make the playoffs situation. If he doesn't play in a team lose the game. Making just that much more depressed I would think. All but ending the season team his overcome much adversity in this or in 2008. With nobody walking wounded in guys like it there was Thomas Tedy Bruschi hanging in their best and hoping to get back on the field in late while Thomas has already been hard that is going to happen Bruschi we don't know yet. It's possible he could be put on IR. But we don't know -- assume that that would happen sooner rather than later. In what continuing here I think that being the quarterback in team leader will decide -- team first and once. That your family is okay and having paid respects Tuesday rejoin the team game. Flip side to this of course that since this is his first year at the Helm and he is still developing. In the to rejoin the team in time to make meetings get the game plan it is reps Belichick. This will probably go with a O'Connell anyway. While that all you know it's it's excellent conjecture excellent you know in -- I think Jim. And again we're going to just give this a little more time few more hours at least. Perhaps as much as another day or so and perhaps when a coach Belichick has as the media conference. By tomorrow. Perhaps we'll have more information on mets' status for Sunday. And whether or not Kevin O'Connell. Could be put into the lineup in that regard and on and whether or not easy receiving reps that we don't assume. He's going to get some reps in practice starting today. Com says John Matt Chatham sounds like a plan. Hopefully Tedy will be back in a -- is it was an option but -- would be a smart pick up and who knows he -- in the linebacker in the next three games it has been one of those years. As for the defensive back spelling. Brian Kelly who was released by Detroit earlier. I'm not sure about signing him any player who can't start for a winless team does impress me we already have a Deltha O'Neal on the defensive backfield it's true. Although I would argue that he would always you know O'Neal doesn't have the foot speed certainly that he wants -- He weekly wage to -- for my liking he does still have some fields marked out there. Com. And I think you know at this stage of the game with three weeks left. You might be a situation -- you need and -- relatively capable body out there and I don't mean to lessen the situation but let's face you know he. He's been a ten year this is eleventh year in the NFL for Brian Kelly in. Com you know he's a veteran players so even veteran guy -- might be what you need out there. I realize that your you know. You know continue to do it but frankly you'd you're at a stage -- W need bodies. If somebody else goes down. There's ever -- reason that toothpick but it could have been three weeks left considering everything that has gone on this year that you might just need. And again when he -- a guy from a team like Detroit who got buried on the depth chart and and I guess didn't live up to. You know what Detroit thought they were getting when they signed him to begin with the only took him away from Tampa Bay. You know if he's got any kind of sense of of professional. You know. Right about him he's not going to want to end this season on a down -- You'd think that -- being picked up by -- team that has. At least in opportunity to compete. You know for a playoff spot that would you don't charge and back up again give him opportunities they. Are out of turn chicken you know feathers and a chicken salad here for the remainder of this season. How many times have we heard created picked but this team. Feel like they've you know been renewed. Almost unanimous every time the team picks up the next player. Like I mean think about New England oh my goodness it's unbelievable you know great team and organization they're in the playoff hunt -- guys could charge don't buy that. Somebody jump -- guy like Brian Kelly a little bit if you do Thomas and they're going through what he's out there. It's always a name that I think deserves and kick around. Jim says I'm 35 year fan. Of the pats and I'm really proud of the team for all that accomplished so many injuries in a late. I was in New Orleans to watch the Raiders lose the saints' 343 in October. 2 -- my prediction for Sunday Cassel all the pats 31. -- seventh. -- I appreciate any thorough and thoughtful email to the preceding yours -- in in your thoughts to welcome web radio act Patriots. Dot com we spoke -- short while ago again with them Mike wagon and from mom. Silver -- illustrated senior writer. About how Tom cable has sort of approached this season. As the interim head coach for the Oakland Raiders stepping in for the fired Lane Kiffin from earlier India. Shall we say messy a situation that the Al Davis kind of put this franchise in. And you know it's certainly an unbelievably difficult situation for any coach to be -- much was an interim coach. -- wasn't -- coach who came on the offensive line when he was college head coach he really didn't have much success in Idaho so I'm. Here's a guy you can look at it wanted to let. He absolutely has everything to lose -- has absolutely nothing. -- And he's going to try to find a way to get this team somewhat motivated. And ready to go. In based on what -- told us earlier you know some of these guys and -- Oakland team have given it up already for 2000 today. He's got to find a way to put team together that's going to compete compete hard and try to win a game against. -- Patriots team that's desperate to get a win themselves -- pretty pretty tall task I would say for any coach must less an interim coach. Conference call members of the Patriots media held just a short while ago and will let -- let you listen into here with Oakland head coach Tom cable."
[1:30:29]" Could you talk about what the Patriots are walking in. On out there in terms of -- the black hole is certainly I would think unique advantage of the races. Collection. Than their outrageous. It really is an -- like -- apparently -- music. -- never seen anything like it and I it's very unique. I think that's -- it. They're outrageous you know maybe they planet and they work at it and they're awesome that's important element another addicted versus. Pretty gruff but losing team can be it will. Could start both Matt Cassel in the in the progress you've seen in looking at film and in the development that you know they'd seen in and so. From when he took over early in the season well there's an impressive it is that the way the players around him stepped up they get good players. -- and wide receivers backfield and a good offensive line into your -- is -- will play around him I think it. That's allowed him to develop and allowed them to -- tremendous improvement he's made. It and you also possible. You're wrong guys JaMarcus Russell -- quarterback who. Hasn't played a whole lot but -- it seems. -- such -- that. Yeah you know -- he sort. Wasn't struggled like you would expect every it really playing for the first and then he got into. A month there were really improved every team -- practices so on game day. You know three out of four. Last he'd -- around 60% completions so there's some some real positives going on there. You know the same time he's still growing and he's still learning. I assume he's coming up that ankle injuries he started to go this week -- yes. Is it difficult at this time yeah certainly it is available to play it for other reasons you know once it playing out the string that. Just to keep guys in spite of the immediately. That. Well I think it really reflection character you know I didn't play him and and how you prepare. The effort that give these last three weeks -- will be real reflection of our characters -- organization has football players football coaches. And certainly there is playing for beyond this year at this point obviously well and that's terrible message to -- something whether it's. You know Robert Plant operators obviously put his plans for something which."
[1:33:15]" Future. Your plans for another contract. Your next move to free agency whatever that is so I think there's still a lot you know personally for guys to play for. -- lot in Atlanta they're well or not sure yet you know they're both very very good players. You know -- it is. In little more than many times and in the Booker. You know he's the guy who does all the dirty work. Tremendous quickness. Unbelievable ball skills and so got our hands full."
[1:33:50]" we need AA. Forty year old. You'd say yeah come back in in play last week at literally right up the street and and play in tendon snapped. What comes to mind. Well."
[1:34:05]" I mean he's in it some like I do you know that was a great great player. In you know this term so why should make him play last week and the he's played so much and done this so long. That really these programs you know he's he's had great training. It is extraordinary from -- that you know come off what are it was on step on the field and start making plays like he did but. You know he's a great player you always has been in just got to get rattled."
[1:34:34]" You know 'cause he actually film. You know -- that Patriots beat and that that they'll plug holes and and that you and it will be fine you."
[1:34:44]" Do I mean I done it every week Los somebody's someone's Oden and and really it just. You know -- been steady and and you know the bird fundamentally sound extremely hard they're physical. So I don't that you make that team must lose your characteristics. That is. Got up. There is ready thank you coach."
[1:35:07]" RS -- Tom cable the interim head coach of the Oakland Raiders. Senate to me like. It would. Short sweet not necessarily to the point. It's difficult to you know manufacturers think. Stories at a team that's three and nine especially when you don't even know you're over you're going to be around for too much longer as I'm sure he probably feels. And yet you've got a job at hand in your job is to try to do is just a couple of moments ago. On get a team rated to play a team that desperate like knowing. You know the Raiders are desperate to their desperate to you know some of them anyway. Are desperate to to get a win. These guys desperate to save their jobs. In May be a guy like cable feels like he's playing for his job we want to try to figure -- put a charge of these guys coming. All sorts of you know conjecture going on here it's just different though. On an interesting situation on to say the very least. When it comes to loan on the Oakland Raiders and trying to get ready. Was looking actually. A little while ago about -- an update on the playoffs situation. And the only thing I can tell you is what we found out here he has. The driver's seat because we -- still belongs to the Jets in the division. Com it is there's -- you know certainly plausible scenario with the Jets and Dolphins could. In of their meeting -- last game of the season could mean the division title and the Patriots even though they would win this week and if they win next week. Could still leave them on the outside looking in even you know if they beat Buffalo in the finale it's possible. That's a scenario that them. Seemed to be more more prevalent -- played about with over the last over the you know the last they're in so. If you're trying to look at this you know from a all right how -- we getting and picture. Easy thing to do your kids justice -- the Jets in the -- each -- to lose one more time and yes one of those losses can be to the other. So what you have to hope for the next two weeks. Is that either. The Jets with the Dolphins loops. If one of those teams can lose one of their next and just one. That it pushing him to have the right one win in the final week a the Jets lose this week. Because they've lost to a world that -- really almost inexplicably. Inexplicably -- that happens they lose again that you root for the -- or you'd root for the of the Jets to beat the Dolphins. If the Dolphins when the last two and and that would be your your ticket in if you wanna. Anyway. That's part of the scenario and it's probably going to get. Important -- jumbled. Well over the course of the next week so as we discussed all of these things and gamble. Would jump in -- some this. Conjecture with them -- back strong tomorrow after Thursday's playbook as well. Just got a recap where we've been that is there's a lot of different things that we touched on of course the young. Top story of the day having to do with the Matt Cassel the passing of his father. -- that has been confirmed by head coach Belichick and effective happened Monday night. The teams that was not heard from -- as he's going to be with -- family in -- his situation is concerned this Sunday's game in Oakland. -- has yet to be determined. In them Hampshire once that determination is made you can find out about it here on Patriots dot com. The other story has to do with that Tedy Bruschi who. Flew back to Boston from the west coast after he. Injured his knee on Sunday in Seattle. Apparently according to several sources he does not. Need to have the knees surgically repaired right now. Com doesn't mean it couldn't happen later but apparently not now. But the problem is there may not be enough time left. In the regular season to get him back on the field. Looks like he could be a four to six week healing process and of course with -- only three weeks left in the regular season. It means that if Bruschi came back it would be in the playoffs or maybe even his latest Super Bowl records. Great data to with a not right now Patriots will even reached the post season. In your kind of stuck in a in almost a double edged sword situation. You'd need to have -- now you might need another body now because you're trying to get into the playoffs with Bruschi apparently not an option. And yet if you put it on the IR to get a body now or then you lose him. For something in the playoffs that you still -- trying to get a he can see where you're kind of between a rock and a hard place and trying to decide what to do about Tedy Bruschi. And that will be a decision undoubtedly that will also be determined over the course of the next -- two. So there are some things story wise that are going on with this team both off and on a the actual playing field and that is them. That's that's that's the absolutely it is where that's concerned in the store that I want to in his briefly touch on. Before we don't got talking with them Eric in night in and Mike. Leg went from around silver and black illustrated was the story there was talk about. That I think is going to end up having so far reaching effects in professional sports. On mentioned this the opening of the program at the AFL and arena football league apparently. And apparently is going to suspend operations 2009 so this is where you know beat the downturn in the economy continues to affect the sports world. On and really now is going to affect. A professional. Sports league. An entire league. The talking about shutting it down in the working toward a single into the league. Where -- you know I would guess somewhat similar to how all of Major League soccer is run with -- league kind of owns the franchises. In the individual investors. Operators run the team's. Bob but the plan is to start up again in 2010. Obvious -- football league but again no official confirmation from the AFL. That's just something that came out of Kansas City. While were one of the franchises located and by the way justice's side toward this. The arena football -- the AF to. Which sort of served as the minor league or training ground to the arena football league teams. On the AF two says it will continue to operate as usual. -- will play this year 2009 -- their tenth anniversary season of the gift that was lasted longer than that a lot of people realize. This would have been the 23. Season for the arena football league which is a long time that we all know. But the the tenth season for AF to. They operate primarily in smaller town smaller markets you know maybe in five to 7000 seat Arenas. And the -- to bill operates entirely on its own. It is not directly affected by the AFL's current situation. And they say they are open and ready for business in 2009 so an interesting side note to the apparent problems at the arena football league. Is going to the game aren't so. Those are the major news items of the day in going to wrap up the program today. By letting you listen in the conference call with a non -- awesome law. He is a year starting quarterback on and certainly one of the premier. Defensive backs I think not only the AFC maybe even in the entire NFL. He is up for free agency in the off season although his. Mike -- argument from a silver and black illustrated told us earlier in the program today. He would not at all be surprised if the Raiders were to slap the franchise tag on him again because that's what they did this year. And he would be. Stock if you will with a Oakland at least one more year before true free agency could be realized by law. On and he says the asking price for a small by the way it would probably be. A couple of first round draft picks and I don't know could be too steep for anybody to play at -- so it would at the latest where he's concerned but. He was the Oakland Raiders player that that met with members of the Patriots media via conference call. And we'll have the latest. On Matt Cassel and Tedy Bruschi and on the preparations for Oakland on tomorrow's play -- time same. And it's channel and here is awesome walk with members of the Patriots media."
[1:43:24]" You -- Q I'm catching up with with Randy my. I'm vaguely you know you gotta put a lot of man coverage and you you're -- and have it's not against that guy."
[1:43:34]" Yeah you know I'm looking forward to it you you look forward. Every game -- topic I'm looking forward to it you know anymore than on the fourth two. The past games we played. But now -- all of our respective match and I know he respects me to for one we were here and I think that level is mutual."
[1:46:03]" You know I I definitely."
[1:46:07]" Absolutely not they're not that we would actually have talked about life and about full volley you know he would let you know. You know that. That sucked it off -- he's been able to do what he's done and he's not here tomorrow. -- interviewed him with New England just because I knew the type of player he was maddening heart -- I don't have a person he was. A lot of people you know he'd get a lot of -- From the media a lot of times but I always -- that he was. You know one of the political one of the best players that have ever been around just because. He looked so carefree you know and didn't have any problems with anyone so. I knew he'd be able to turn around as a he's he kept their success. Last year with New England with a probable than me and him and the record those sorts of things."
[1:47:47]" Like it -- you now but I like -- down."
[1:47:51]" But that it's clear that I have been frustrated them in. Spoken W law about but it. A few occasions -- I usually don't speak Muppets are -- but it it it reached a point where. The different stress frustration level can get so high and I'm -- and he. You don't wanna. -- silent about it anymore you know so. I'm in my frustration level is it has hit. At a different level that these and then it hit any haven't even. I don't know that we have to -- glad we don't have a chance to lead with. And some. Modicum of of of respect. If we can go away a lead and -- next weekend and both comprise them and and with more. You know accountability that we got a chance but he I think it's clear that event not just myself but if you -- here. Are frustrated by the the network --"
[1:48:58]" Are you going out what would -- fit -- every bit -- you know collect a paycheck every week and whatever. Aren't you limited. But it did why haven't you -- it straight it is one of the things that. Street view -- guys really are right and three acting is that the and."
[1:49:20]" Well you know it and Andy you really didn't have to search the heart. Of players in this league because you really don't know exactly what their reasons are for four or playing or. If they're being an apathetic toward games and and preparation sometimes you really don't know. And that I'm you know I really don't know that I didn't know that there are times when we lose. -- when it looked like we want. You know at the public entity. In on -- and then. It it -- that that's what frustrates me and then Tom of the other things that first that are frustrating not making the same mistakes. -- play after play a game that they game. And -- not be -- of growth you know it's clear that not only you know I let it especially in football it's how about growth and and getting better and the fact that we haven't been able to do -- there's there's there's something wrong and it does get frustrating I mean as a human being it gets frustrating to feel like. [1:50:33]" I'm sure you're aware that -- receiver Wes Welker media. From what you've seen and compete at the -- what makes. A guy like him on the smaller side such a difficult target."
[1:50:47]" He's just fell away here you know his awareness. Level it is is probably among the best. I'm as far as receivers go in the National Football League and he's just so aware of having you know and out of holes. In the and then he just trust that his quarterback will get the ball in those situations and has not necessarily -- Up -- he'll go Appleton one not the one he's just you know destroying guys the whole game it just. He knows how to get open and her you know it is difficult to explain. I mean not that difficult the play he didn't both have to get open you watch him on element regardless of the team he plant again in -- of the that are going to be there and he'd he'd been able to Priscilla before for the pages the path of the years. He thinks its size. It and it's. You know decide that can be an advantage regardless of who you're I think. It's clear him opposite sides -- and then it's it's clear that you know a guy a little sorted in my. Can have advantages but. With -- sort he had advantages as well because he's quicker player you know black and get that Pollard. Longer guys they're not as quick as they may have more -- field speed but. Uh oh with the wind you know he's quick and that helped him getting open and those little you know because. You can expect him to -- you can -- on a dime. You know you'll have a tough time getting back the wrong just because it. Center of gravity so lol. Under the ground you know that it's it's definitely positive for him in that regard."
