[0:12]" From -- for. I'm forty information on this. Patriots dot com."
[0:24]" News announcement the other -- yeah now the leaders of patriots football weekly and glory beret and ski. I -- labor happy it's Wednesday here at gave them my best. We -- W writers and the draft prospect podcast is back in behind Eric Allen DL bring in today solid year on onions."
[0:44]" I don't -- Hilary thank you and yes we are back with our draft preview podcast. But to a position breakdown between now and you do April 26 draft the various spots that'll be available with the patriots might do in the draft with the various prospects. But before we get into today's election which is quarterbacks which is obviously positioned. Looking more for depth than back up any starter Tom Brady for now I think has a decent hold on his position. On we're going to -- enact a national perspective and in look for a an analyst who can bring a little bit more of the you know flavor that these draft scout people bring to the the draft preview process and he is a senior analyst. For NFL draft scout dot com rob rank."
[1:28]" They are not good to have you here on a podcast -- to -- today good well I just you know we are starting now with the position where. In the patriots aren't a very looking for a starter and -- quarterback I think -- pretty that would Tom Brady for the -- window here for five years but it is a a position that they've drafted often in the draft looking late round prospect try to build back up but. Before we get into the patriot perspective. I want to ask you about some of the top guys obviously a local guy here from Boston College Matt Ryan is considered potential first round pick and maybe the first quarterback but and the guys Brian -- in the conversation so what are your thoughts on on how those top few quarterback prospect player."
[2:09]" I think -- or potential or they have a quarterback draft -- Singaporeans all the fiscal look at Korea strong arm very accurate intelligence squared the pocket. On the kind of footwork and can move around. And consult a true yeah -- believe he's going to be top ten they can -- my apartment cops fired I don't necessarily believe that you think number one overall a lot of people believe I just don't think that he has. That the natural tools the teams are looking for for number one overall pick but I do it mentioned -- that he potential was but he had a quarterback connected Louisville's Brian browns quarterback and also to -- in the first round but he's more of the mid to late round or mid to late first round kind of player. He did everything here. Well not seen exemplary and he's not a fantastic pitcher one trained he he's probably is best fast and his accuracy is poised in the pocket. But I because he has only Marshall -- because he has been slowed by a great deal of talent while at Louisville and the past -- the -- have not had a great success the next level that victory he has more listeners. Have a little bit of a drop is certainly the perception that he has -- prospect and keep it dropped below that has Aaron Rodgers and record over last --"
[3:27]" So with -- a guy who you have now selected you know as -- top quarterback is he a guy that would be. The top quarterback Corey potential top ten pick in any draft or is this a case of a guy like Alex Smith who many believe -- command a year earlier would have been the ex quarterback taken where does Ryan fit in. -- comparison year -- year quarterback prospects."
[3:47]" LA doesn't rank among the elite quarterbacks the last couple years he would be a first round pick certainly unity in the draft and he's just been too successful throughout his career not to be. But as far as you know comparing him to a Drew Bledsoe or Carson Palmer scenery Latin adding he's gotten academic character the cut across. Output in the -- mid first round kind of player in a typical class because as classes as we can to top quarterback this and that's what is -- it."
[4:16]" One guy that seems to be you know small school guy who's kind of getting in the conversation for one of the top handful quarterbacks this is Joe black autumn Delaware what are your thoughts on him in -- what can he bring to the NFL."
[4:26]" You know lack of intriguing guy at least 662 and 35 pound got a monster arms of strongest arm of any quarterback in the draft and as I certainly understand why teams are excited about it upside -- the same time he is very much so a developmental player he's the player that when I watch him he's accurate enough. For the lower level college football he's accurate enough to to be reasonably impressive at the senior bowl the Columbine. But I wonder if he has the accuracy at this point in his career. That's coming in being an impact player yet so when he throws the ball he forces the receivers stopped a little bit and that's going to limit him nine yards after the catch. As the receivers ticket for -- obviously limited success. And so I believe that he -- more respect to third round prospect -- you you -- lot of hype right now -- I believe it is warranted because he does have the physical tools but does the player that. You have to can. Yet no you get a little bit here the players an -- at least a year to open or is indicate that it."
[5:27]" We're talking to rob rang right now about the quarterbacks in this draft -- the senior analyst from NFL draft scout dot com -- turn the conversation now towards. You know potential patriots and in mid to later round -- I'm who could come in here and obviously. Serve as a back up to Tom Brady may be developing a few years they've tried to do -- on dvd tried to do with Matt Cassel Kliff Kingsbury Matt Gutierrez they've had a number of them. I'm one guy where a little bit to him because we've heard that they. Have liked what they've seen from him at the college level is COLT Brennan of Hawaii who obviously there's a lot of questions about size and the system what are your thoughts on corporate."
[6:03]" You know actual article -- a lot of people army he. They're they're definitely in the concerns about it aren't strikes are absolutely tournament he he does not have the arm. Two to make every well past that that's the thing in New England system and in the west coast offense as well. -- Torre that you don't need to have a dom need to have accuracy cabinet that on the ball to complete after 515 yard range and he has I think it is going to be very successful in this system that allows him. Choose to scan the field as did the light the shock and -- and just that so little tough because he -- various factories among the most Centre court record mr. But it didn't you have to be your system that that protects and he doesn't have the sights and to look for yet to enter the questions that he doesn't have the arm strength. To be successful in the risky and so you have to go to opposite that tailor made for it was built."
[6:59]" Rob there's a guy that I thought at the Columbine and why aren't -- little intrigue with the tall he's very fast Kevin O'Connell from San Diego State -- you think of this."
[7:09]" I -- it is definitely developmental prospect -- a player of it that I expect to be traffic somewhere between the fifth and seventh rounds so. Definitely more -- of the long term. Project but figured a player that has the tools eventually he talked to -- exports spot 230 pounds and and played very well at San Diego it's any state and he's a player that. I think that you're going to have implied that the board has the draft approaches. And I certainly helped and so strong senior bowl succeed reputable Big East west -- game and who -- performances. So I believe you can see -- move up and it is one of the more intriguing development prospects as far secondary development prospects of the stress."
[7:51]" Another a couple of other guys -- like your thoughts on another one from a small school Paul Smith from Tulsa and then also a couple of guys from bigger schools barricades and Tennessee and Chad any from Michigan."
[8:04]" It was also -- you talk about player it is very similar a lot of ways to it took -- before COLT Brennan. Is a little bit undersized he has enough arm strength -- complete -- short to immediate -- passes he's accurate not -- I don't believe he is Driscoll -- although his numbers would would argue. Otherwise he's known among them. One of the more efficient quarterbacks in the entire country last year and throughout his career total but again that the players that have to be. Put into the system that fits his -- to mention a couple of other placed thirteen from Tennessee's he has all the -- you're looking orbit. Generally when you have a very tall. Quarterback a lot of times that translates to big are they working just not a big harmonies only marginally accurate. So I'm not as part hurricane -- a lot of people are he has had a great deal of success -- DC and that's something you cannot hit the weight room."
[8:54]" That's same time I don't believe that he has -- tools that projecting the next level that some of the other lesser known quarterbacks in my house. Chad -- from Michigan as a player I'm very -- on them higher on on Chattanooga believed. Just about anybody else throughout starting community is what I watch him -- there's no doubt when you watch him that he has struggled at times. With -- was stopping the avalanche assistant but the term we use that we're wasting start to go down. -- (%expletive) -- and growled form he has not shown the ability to kind of rally the troops there and bring things up. As a that is definitely a concern -- every start parents when they western stat that when he has protection. He has his backers in the quarterback in the -- he has strong arm as the quarterback in this draft I really believe that he's going to surprise to -- it's an excellent it's going to be a second round pick. But it -- ultimately could end up being a better pro quarterback. Fans and I didn't -- draft ahead of Matt Ryan or brought."
[9:51]" Probably best of thousands of -- Are there any guys I left out I might projected as a good fit with the patriots on the second day because of they're skills because of their you know developmental level but guys that might be a good good to keep it up -- patriots fans when new England's on the clock."
[10:07]" You know because you talked about it quarterbacks is three out of the one player that I I would mention I think -- would -- to a New England as far as intelligent answer. Who have not accuracy -- to be successful. -- Carl Russo of the wind is different elements that you're all obviously going to outplay at our world would be John David -- from European that you struggled at times that you receive it you can have the luxury of the talent. Facility other accuracy great quarterbacks -- certainly don't Carson Palmer. When it comes this two matchup but it doesn't know the things of that nature. But I view them as it was very similar players -- not wires -- player who. Who can be productive in the right system because he's accurate have to poison out. He played well enough for the senior bowl. He wasn't very impressed for the column by it was actually as far as an accurate I've ever seen him have washed including a lot of the last couple years. But I do believe that he has definitely long term potential like today in this in the third before product development of quarterback. They keep the players every team that's certainly his team has lost a that this is in England is. Have to consider."
[11:14]" Ira before let you go we know quarterback is the marquee positions whether in the NFL or in the NFL draft. Every year there are stories about the position whether the guy like. Brady -- slipping further than some people expected or you know smaller school guy -- guy people familiar with like Tarvaris Jackson suddenly coming up in the second round pick. Who would you list you know what what the story be you'd think I know it's early but looking ahead of the draft what kind of stories do you expect to come out of you know a draft this year quarterback."
[11:42]" They ask. I think there's a couple of different story certainly Matt Ryan where he -- there's going to be adjusted to it because opting that you in the top I talked to three -- about Matt -- specifically in the last 24 hours and -- had -- with a lock for the top spot. And the other team -- top fifteen and -- to kind of -- completely out of first round. -- that respect in decision. Is is indicative of kind of the way this quarterback class this event. That's definitely get the historic. And out off election small school players -- to -- a couple of years ago. Scully rolled all the -- for round Joe -- go left or this year just have to -- authority to him about it is already arguing that kind of attention so I expect to split. So what he is -- after the second round but it will chemical majors as bright people but get mr. bitches wire brom I really think he's a player. That there's been so much hype about him throughout early in his career there's a lot people out there who were considered until the casual -- fans don't really know what's going on. If you give it is among the elite quarterbacks in this draft that's just simply not the case he's a player. Like very -- believe it's going to be traffic around that fifteen to twenty range if you fall completely out of first round that wouldn't be surprised if some people despite just one."
[12:55]" All right rob what we appreciate you joining us and again this is -- from NFL draft scout dot com. Thanks and now hopefully we'll talk to you again down the line media and check -- with a few more positions. Again I think there."
[13:09]" Okay now that we've got the national perspective from one of the premier draft sites on the Internet company we're now doing a little cross motion with -- rob ranks going to have some analysis and patriots football weekly look at the local perspective from us. Genius is down here Gillette Stadium. Erik LB you know still here tomko -- has joined us I find it very it and coming off or rob said the question at the toppled the quarterback position Matt Ryan. And Brian brom I finished my film work from a quarterback today. In my opinion -- wrong I think. Brom is the best talent I just think he's going to end up being the best quarterback."
[13:44]" One -- Vastly disagree with a was the talent level the Louisville had last year you read the other top receiver. Dropped about three passes a game may not talking about all right in his hands he he was a major disappointment for them Harry Douglas a very good player for a what they did have a great running back. Played one of the worst offensive lines in college football last year every time you watch the Louisville game all the announcers would say is how tough Brian brom was good he would take beating after beating after beating. It still come up and lead his team back in those games so I think that shows something when -- playing at a team it got to the initials leadership I think Israel's tough miss. And I would disagree I don't think Louisville was that talent that last year as."
[14:24]" And Matt Ryan on the questions I have about him. I think the intermediate throws. I saw him a lot either checking off for throwing the deep ball which is pretty -- called quarterbacks but I wonder can drop back and just throw that fifteen yard out. -- fifteen yard in cut that I think you need to do with pro level he certainly has. The rest of the I mean he's polished he can handle the media he's a guy that we talk about. Playing with guys -- any know he has no skill players around him that are going to be an NFL a large reason for a number of options at last year I believe was his receivers that we could open right. Nothing and they they were passing offense had to throw the ball he knew that nothing I noticed in his pilots like he he tended to exit one target. -- telegraph a lot of -- was going with him look that -- in any and -- and I got a player that but and that's -- it it's one of those is that the way he is or is he getting away with hitting caller yeah 'cause. I think most of these guys I actually think that was won a bronze drinks I think he read it looked awful I think he left right comes back left whatever may be. But I think both of those guys are clear. NFL caliber quarterbacks they're going to start at some point they'll -- an opportunity probably to be a team's starter franchise player beyond that. I'm not sure there is anymore those I think the rest are second third round picks who you might say. You give a chance you know backers you know guys from last year he get a chance those guys would be any flak though woods and that's -- the next group there. Tom wood and was a guy I was very. Underwhelmed I don't like it either the I had flashbacks to one -- money they eat."
[15:58]" Was that a lot oldest all the ball up for grabs either for or Stevie job and it'll -- and try to make a play ideas along arm motion or take Europe yet there the only guy I've ever seen he doing that was Randall Cunningham their member it was vote. We'll -- that we -- the Florida game winner. They they remember how long to get that pass off with the guy was wide open it yet forever to get that -- and that hurt and even more because I don't think he's a guy that. Read and throw the ball he he he -- to the guys know and then rose and with the -- of his motion. The guy might not be open by and the bald eagles eagles stand there until the create more time with -- what he's always there at the same guy waiting that -- but he outlook on the other guy that that seems to have that kind of long slow motion --"
[16:44]" Oh yes and you know he's what does -- 67. So and change yes you know it. You were you would think he'd be more of the the strong -- I'd get off quicker but it takes -- takes awhile to get the ball out of there that the guy that I was most impressed with that we've seen so far it's Kevin O'Connell. San Diego State the well I was going to get the -- in the next tier of of late round prospects and to me. He's a guy worthy of moving up and obviously we now have. You know month and a half forget for this change he was a Columbine superstar in terms of miserables and height weight running. On -- but you watch the tape and I agree with -- I think. Not knowing anything about him easily had the most --"
[17:21]" On the the recently guys like that is to let's say days that fifth -- now he moves up to third round Nightline it's different but fifth round area I want a guy with upside. You know I don't want a 59 guy like you were a weaker guys like that doesn't have but true McGraw I -- guy who's got all fields -- Got a lot of athleticism like well hopefully. The guys -- draft that date to get back the flat golfers that -- You know I haven't watch Delaware play well while guys like him Helen. Because he's not goal in the third or fourth round you're talking about the end around one early round to become a division one double -- I'd probably get sample matches they would fish out of water is the division one double -- demon that was pretty bad. And finding good and a good one to a good run heavily team and I think what rob says a lot we will analyze -- while. Be over drafted. He feels like rob could get over drafted in things like that like flat flexible he was go that route three or four. I would have any problem -- would you pick him in the top forty yeah that's not a good."
[18:24]" that that that that's reaching with him at least from what we've seen yet are clearly has the NFL -- natural part of what it's like the receiver who runs the four to seven. That automatically a lot of -- mind bumped him up because he has something you need -- and Michael has that kind of arm. I just think at the quarterback position to say and I know we went to -- in the transcript of you know he's questionable in terms of his reads and -- Delaware animals and just going to believe he's just going to be in the NFL and it's all going to come together foreman he's going to put that great arm to use. I just think that's a bit of a reach another guy we we thirty sort of looks like he's going to be one of those guys on. Paul Smith out of Tulsa you very much -- Paul Smith fan. And I came away thinking ball high stake so it'll be -- I feel bad apple Canada I would say I am very -- I don't you love them you've been raving about a week as a seventh round draft pick yeah I think I would take a shot out of the seventh round but I also that. I -- your assessment I could you."
[19:21]" Like Canada is being a star up there too so yet you're talking about the seventh round of the patriots -- Paul Smith. I'm not going to complain you'll jump off a -- for so there I'll be ripping him on the blog -- they do -- he's got that -- style of play you know he he looked kind of likened to -- runs around a lot they have a lot of designed -- skittish he he's -- he -- and take chances on on his long -- who's got a decent -- stuck -- he doesn't give you have a care in the -- you guys -- but that can do that is LT -- that in order to -- You know we brought another guy like lately is that Alex brink quarterback from Washington State. The reason I like break as he put up huge numbers both with a passer ever Washington they actually a lot they had some good players there -- but. You watch him against USC last year they they got destroyed but the first half he kept his team in the game by go thirteen to fifty. Did you feel he can only do that for so long before the defense is going to get all over that -- of the offensive line to protect them. I like watching guys like that put up big numbers -- against the better teams in the conference so that's a guy in the seventh round you might want to look at too with the possible that a but I agree -- you guys if you go to get a second date guys -- the guys they have the up side -- cardinals one of those guys."
[20:33]" He has every day because he has a guys that build. You know I compare we were walking down here I compared him to Ben Roethlisberger that he has a good arm he's athletic I don't think he's looking to run. Like gate a Dennis Dixon who's an injured guy in this draft or young. I Dennis Dick and I told Tom you know you watch him play after play these Vince Young. He's the aim their mannerisms there the way they run their fake the way they will run up the line of scrimmage just dumped it off the last everything about him."
[21:03]" But obviously usually boys are held an idea of that you're going to get Dennis Dixon -- problems six or seven most likely sudden. He's not going to play next year right with the reason why like him is because he'll probably never be a starter in this league which you can do some things you can put it packages with him so you most guys after the seventh -- is going to be caught and gone with the guy we saw red Smith -- Last year with the jets -- some things I think if you get a guy like -- to put the packet or two it kinda surprised to hear -- that's -- thinking at some valiantly and he's got that up -- at that time in the draft that you're looking for exactly."
[21:37]" Yeah because I mean he's a -- salary -- out and you play it right there because somebody's taken a chance on his athleticism even if they project him as a wide receiver or just a Jack of all trades whatever. It may be one guy want to touch on before we go is -- COLT Brennan who we've heard in the past that the patriots would like what he was doing at Hawaii. He's a little different in when you talk about a late -- pick in that he doesn't possess the prototypical arm in size and all that you know I would compare him to -- you know it's about Paul Smith. Paul Smith as a as a pour -- yet COLT Brennan has the numbers quick release. What chalk it struggled obviously in the bowl game. And and he's a guy that he overcomes some things to play and that's one -- I just want to mention what about him there's going to be a lot of differing opinions. But -- that you got to throw out it's doubtful he'd ever had a chance you could put Dan Marino back there that bulldogs beat -- all over him from start to finish and I have to be honestly I was just impressed that he finished the game so low while he may not be a great fit the NFL I think that game. It was look at that they were just overmatched I think if he's on the clock in round seven patriots take at all and certainly I've heard some people that he's not getting it drafted -- doesn't get drafted then I think it's a -- a patriot because I think they will make him -- one of their priority free agents and -- signing bonus I think they would love to have him in him. -- if they can develop animal the next couple years. -- you know there's a lot of guys NFL draft scout has let me look here real quick eighteen potential draft -- they're projecting in the seven rounds of the draft. He'll be -- to keep and I am because I really think patriots will take what they've done it often. And I think they need one -- Gutierrez is the next in line that development opposition I think hassles at the end of that line and about to be run out of town. So who knows -- might get. To the Arctic and if they can get him later in the later after -- I would not put anything past they'll they'll check so deep and I the quarterback position on day two of the draft. That's going to put the wraps on this roster report we're going to send the baccalaureate."
[23:31]" Thanks sandy this is the draft prospect beat me this book and that's okay being famous as me and but then the next clinic -- So next time thanks for listening and gopac."
